Ecology Specialist

If this sounds like you, our Environment and Heritage Team are seeking an Ecology Specialist. Reporting to the Environment and Heritage Programs Lead, you will provide technical leadership across ecological assessments, approvals and compliance activities to support our infrastructure operations

In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring projects meet regulatory and internal program requirements while effectively identifying and managing environmental risks. As Arc enters an exciting phase of improvement and growth, this position will help drive positive ecological outcomes, strengthen systems, and build capability across the organisation.

The Role

As the Ecology Specialist, you will be responsible for: 

• Leading and delivering flora and fauna assessments in line with relevant technical guidance
• Preparing and reviewing high-quality ecological reports to support approvals and project outcomes
• Providing specialist advice to internal stakeholders across maintenance and capital works
• Managing ecological inputs to permitting processes and coordinating environmental approvals
• Ensuring compliance with Commonwealth and State environmental legislation and approval conditions
• Maintaining ecological datasets, including GIS-based information on species, communities and offsets
• Undertaking field assurance activities and supporting environmental incident investigations
• Building strong relationships with regulators and coordinating submissions, reporting and engagement
• Providing training and guidance to improve ecological awareness and capability across the business

About You

 Our ideal candidate would possess the following:

• Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Ecology, Botany, Zoology or a related discipline
• Demonstrated experience in terrestrial ecology, ideally within infrastructure, resources or linear assets. Successful candidate would preferably hold 7-10+ years’ experience in both botanical and zoological areas.
• Strong experience delivering flora and fauna surveys and ecological assessments
• Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing technical reports for environmental approvals
• Solid knowledge of relevant environmental legislation (e.g. EPBC Act, WA Clearing Regulations)
• Experience managing environmental approvals, including clearing permits and fauna/flora authorities to take
• Proven ability to engage with regulators and manage stakeholder relationships
• Experience managing consultants and reviewing technical outputs
• Proficiency in GIS (ArcGIS preferred) and ecological data management
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
• Proven leadership capability, with the ability to mentor others and influence environmental outcomes
• A continuous improvement mindset with strong attention to detail and organisational skills
