Derbarl is seeking a Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Program Officer to join the team!

About the role

As a TIS Program Officer, you will be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of collaborative activities regarding tackling Indigenous smoking.

The TIS team focuses on undertaking a multi-level population health and whole of region approach to tobacco control, targeting all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This approach involves community education via events, media messages (including social and online), small group sessions, and referral pathways to specialist Tobacco Educational Services for one-on-one support. The TIS team actively collaborates and works closely with the National Best Practice Unit to develop strategies, address key challenges, facilitate data collection, undertake performance reporting and participate in national and state workshops and training.

About the Organisation

Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS) was established in 1974 and is the largest Aboriginal community-controlled health service provider in Western Australia, providing care to over 20,000 Aboriginal patients across four clinics in East Perth, Mirrabooka, Maddington and Midland. Our staff enable the delivery of culturally responsive primary health services, focusing on prevention, early intervention, comprehensive care and care coordination including chronic disease management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES would include, but not be limited to the following:

• Development, implementation and evaluation of collaborative activities regarding tackling smoking.
• Implementing local health promotion activities e.g. community forums, supporting the creation of smoke-free homes and workplaces, sharing information about effects of smoking, to increase community understanding of the dangers of smoking, awareness and benefits of smoke free environments.
• Promote and support programs, appropriate to the worker’s qualification level, to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and refer people to other health programs as appropriate.
• Under the coordination of the TIS Coordinator, work in partnership with the network of TIS Program Officers in the region, with the State-based mentor as appropriate, and with the broader national network coordinated by the National Coordinator.
• Participate in appropriate training and development programs and networking opportunities, including national conferences, workshops and seminars.
• Collect data to assist in the evaluation of the Department of Health, Indigenous Australians Health Programs Agreement.
• Promote and support smoke-free workplace strategies within the organisation.
• Support and promote healthy, smoke-free behaviours in line with the Tackling Indigenous Smoking program
• Perform other duties as agreed between the Department of Health (Cth) and the organisation.
• Assist the TIS Coordinator in the delivery of regional smoking prevention and promote awareness through social marketing campaigns and events.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

• Demonstrated experience working within the health promotion, community development or public health field.
• Ability to take direction, determine priorities and manage workloads in order to meet agreed timelines and objectives.
• Ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their leaders, respecting traditional culture, values and ways of doing business.
• Ability to work with other health professions and organisations.
• Knowledge of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• Personal drive, ability to determine priorities, to work in teams and to manage workloads to achieve results
• Demonstrated ability to uphold the principles of cultural safety including an ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
• A National Police Criminal History check (no older than 6 months old) with acceptable outcome.
• Current Working with Children Clearance.
• Current WA Driver’s Licence and fully Covid-19 vaccinated.

Desirable

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and is acknowledged as such by their community.
• Ability to deliver appropriate education and provide referral pathways to quit smoking support services to achieve reduction of tobacco usage amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Qualification in the area of health sciences or education equivalent experience.
