About the role
The LabThe Lab is an independent insight and strategy agency built around a simple idea: see differently.
We help ambitious brands look beyond the obvious to understand people, culture and behaviour in more useful and imaginative ways.
Our work spans brand and communications, innovation, customer experience, audience discovery, cultural intelligence and behavioural science. We bring together quantitative researchers, qualitative researchers, strategists, data specialists, behavioural scientists and technologists. Different perspectives are a big part of how we work and how we uncover the things that more conventional approaches can miss.
Founded in 2006, The Lab remains proudly independent and is a certified B Corp. That means we care about doing commercially strong work while also having a positive impact on our people, our community and the environment. We offer flexible working, generous leave, inclusive parental leave and a culture that takes both great work and people’s wellbeing seriously.
The RoleWe’re looking for a junior to mid-level quantitative researcher to join our Melbourne team. This is a full-time, hybrid role for someone who enjoys working with data but is equally interested in the people, behaviours and stories behind the numbers.
You’ll help design and deliver quantitative research across a wide range of clients and challenges. One week you might be exploring how people make decisions in a category; the next, measuring the strength of a brand, identifying new audiences or testing an idea before it goes to market.
Your work will include writing questionnaires, managing fieldwork, cleaning and analysing data, building clear charts and helping turn findings into a compelling story.
You won’t be expected to simply produce tables and hand them over. We want someone who is curious enough to ask what the data really means, confident enough to challenge the obvious answer and imaginative enough to find a fresh way of looking at the problem.
You’ll work closely with experienced quant researchers, as well as our qualitative, strategy, cultural and behavioural teams. There will be plenty of support, but also room to take ownership, develop your skills and shape the kind of researcher you want to become.
What We’re Looking ForYou may already have some experience in a research agency, consulting environment, client-side insights team or another data-focused role. You might also be earlier in your career with strong technical foundations and a clear interest in research, people and behaviour.
Ideally, you’ll bring:Some experience in quantitative research, data analysis or a related field. An understanding of survey design, sampling and statistical analysis.Strong Excel skills and experience with tools such as Q, SPSS, R, Python, Displyr or similar. The ability to clean, organise and make sense of messy datasets.A clear and engaging communication style. An interest in turning numbers into stories, rather than reporting data for its own sake.Curiosity about brands, culture, society and why people behave the way they do.A collaborative mindset and willingness to learn from people with different skills and perspectives.Good attention to detail without losing sight of the bigger picture.
Experience across a number of platforms like Q, Displayr and generative AI or other survey and visualisation platforms would be crucial.
A degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, psychology, data science, market research or a related discipline would be helpful. We’re equally interested in what you can do, how you think and what you’re excited to learn.
