Legal / Industrial Officer

Position overview:

Under broad direction, and as part of the Legal and Industrial Team, manage and determine priorities, initiate action and take responsibility for the completion of assigned tasks, or projects including: liaison and negotiation with employers, other unions, professional bodies and all levels of the CFMEU.

Training/qualifications

• Bachelor of Laws or other relevant tertiary qualifications.
• Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience desirable.
• Current practicing certificate or ability to obtain one preferred but not essential.

Required skills, knowledge, experience & attributes:

• Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Adobe and related programs.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and manage competing priorities.
• Highly developed stakeholder management.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement in industrially sensitive environments.

Role Accountabilities:

Responsible for management of own legal caseload within team of legal/industrial officers including:

• All aspects of case preparation, management and appearances in industrial tribunals (e.g. Victorian Building Industry Disputes Panel / Fair Work Commission) and courts, including briefing counsel and external law firms;
• Providing legal advice and assistance to CFMEU members, organisers and leadership in Victoria/Tasmania regarding all manner of industrial and employment law matters, including workplace disputes, dismissals, wage claims, protected action ballots, industrial action, enterprise agreements and awards, right of entry etc;
• Dealing with regulatory authorities (e.g. Fair Work Ombudsman, Worksafe, Fair Work Commission);
• Interacting and liaising with other unions;
• Researching and writing submissions on issues that affect the construction industry;
• Participating in negotiations of enterprise agreements for the construction industry;
• General legal practitioner duties.
