About the role
Part Time | Starting with 18–22 hrs/week | $35–42/hour | Fairfield, Melbourne
Northside Movement is a coaching studio in Melbourne's inner north. We've been operating for ten years. We are not a gym.. at least, not in the traditional sense.
Our members don't come here for equipment or access. Some come because of how this place makes them feel. Because someone here knows their name, their history, their coffee preference, and where they are in their journey. Some come here because they want to keep up with their kids. Many come because we're all fighting to avoid getting "old" earlier than we'd like. And almost everyone comes because it's just a freaking great place to spend an hour of our day working on ourselves.
We're looking for one person to step into the senior layer of our team. This isn't a role for someone who wants to show up, run sessions, and leave. It's for someone who wants real ownership of what it feels like to train at Northside. Because the coaching relationship is at the centre of everything we do.
The RoleYou'll lead group, semi-private & personal training sessions, work closely with the studio founder on programming, and take ownership of the Northside training experience when the founders aren't in the room. You'll also contribute to the operational running of the studio where it makes sense.
This is a genuine part-time employment role — paid leave, sick leave, superannuation, a professional development budget For the right person, this role is intended to grow into senior leadership responsibility, including mentoring coaches, helping maintain coaching standards and taking increasing ownership of day-to-day studio operations., and a clear pathway to senior leadership. Not casual, not a side gig.
If successful, your role will start with a 3 week fully paid onboarding where you can get to know the people, the space and the flow of Northside before getting thrown up the front to lead the room. It also gives us a chance to get to know you properly. How you coach, how you communicate, what you naturally take ownership of, where you’re strongest and where we can help you grow – and have a great time while you’re doing it!
As the role itself is a part-time position, your week would include a minimum of:
- 3 x Mornings (4.5-6.5 hour shifts)
- 1 x Evening (not essential but useful)
- 1 x 60 Minute Paid Development Meeting
What We're Looking ForA coach who holds themselves to a standard that doesn't require an audience. Someone whose sessions look the same whether or not anyone's watching - and who can look honestly at their own coaching, what's working and what isn't, without needing to be told. Self-awareness isn't a nice-to-have here. It's most of the job.
Someone who owns the outcome, not just the effort. If a session isn't landing or something in the studio isn't working, they don't leave it for the next person — they fix it. And someone who can meet a full room, a hard week, or a plan that changes at short notice without it knocking them off their feet.
Someone who can bring the rest of the coaching team with them. Not by demanding it, but by the standard they hold and the trust they build. That includes showing up for the team, not just the sessions. Our staff catch-ups and member events exist to build something real between the people here.. they're part of the culture, not optional extras.
Someone who's genuinely invested in people. Their progress, their journey, the long game and who understands that the energy they bring into a room is part of the job. Not because the job description says so. Because they get it.
Someone who sweats the details most coaches skip past. The bookings, the notes, the follow-up message. The intuitive check to the member that looked anxious before they performed a deadlift, to taking the extra time to teach someone why we're doing what we're doing.. rather than just ticking boxes. They understand that's what real coaching is all about.
Someone who actively seeks out what makes them better. You're genuinely driven to get better at their craft, and actively seek out new experiences, ideas and learnings and bring this back into the room, rather than continuing to coach the same way you did five years ago.
Required qualifications for the role:
A minimum of Cert III/IV in Fitness / Personal Training
CPR / First Aid
Specialist qualifications (Pilates, Cycle, Boxing) also preferred!
Exercise Science / Health Science Degree (preferred but not essential)
You’re only interested in running your sessions and heading home, rather than being an active part of the team and community.
You need external pressure to perform consistently.
You'd rather stay on the outside of a team than get stuck into it.
You treat the details of running a session — bookings, notes, communication — as someone else's job.
You think that you're the most important person in the coach-member relationship.
How to Apply
If you think we'd be a good fit, send us a short cover letter and your CV.
As part of your application, we’d also love you to answer these three questions:
Tell us about something you noticed and improved in a workplace without being asked.
What does taking ownership mean to you when you’re part of a small team?
Why us? What excites you most about the position and working at Northside Movement?
We don’t need an essay – a couple of thoughtful paragraphs is plenty! 😊
We run a 3 step interview process which is:
1. Phone Interview - Brief chat to get to know each other
2. In-Person Interview - More chatting.. but face to face.
3. The Practical - Some questions, some training, some scenarios.
We read every submission personally and will do our best to respond to everyone in a timely manner. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
