Clinical Psychologist

Kids & Co Clinical Psychology is expanding, and we are recruiting three clinical psychologists — one each for our Balmain (Inner West), Waverley (Eastern Suburbs) and Katoomba (Blue Mountains) teams.
Registrars and recent graduates are genuinely welcome alongside experienced clinicians.
ABOUT THE PRACTICEKids & Co Clinical Psychology is an established private practice working therapeutically with children, adolescents, families and parents. We are not a general practice that also sees children. This population is the whole of what we do, and the practice has been built around it — the rooms, the referral relationships, the supervision structure and the way we think about cases.
We are led by myself Dr Anna Cohen, a clinical psychologist whose background is in trauma, attachment and creative therapeutic approaches with children. She has authored several books on child and adolescent practice and trains clinicians across Australia.
A CASELOAD AT THE PACE YOU CHOOSEMost private practice roles hand you a full diary and a login, and the pace is set for you. Ours isn't. You decide how quickly you build. If you want to move fast, our referral stream will support a full caseload from your first month — we have the demand and we are not rationing it. If you would rather build gradually, so you have time to prepare, write up properly and actually think about your cases, that is equally welcome and nobody will push you. What we will not do is fill your diary without asking. The pace is a conversation, not a default.
THE WORKIndividual therapeutic work with children and adolescents, alongside parenting and family intervention.
Presentations span anxiety, trauma and attachment difficulties, emotional dysregulation, behavioural concerns, school refusal, family transition and separation, grief and loss, sibling difficulties, and neurodivergence including autism and ADHD.
You would have room to work in the modalities the child in front of you actually needs — play, expressive and creative approaches, movement and body-based work, sandtray and art-based methods, and family systems thinking. Not a manual applied uniformly regardless of presentation. If you have a modality you want to develop, or one you want to bring with you, there is space for that here and we will support you to build it.
Our approach is neurodivergent-affirming and trauma-informed, and we work with families rather than around them. Parents are part of the treatment, not a scheduling problem. You would work directly with parents, run feedback and review sessions, and liaise with schools, paediatricians, GPs and allied health colleagues.
Cognitive and diagnostic assessment work is available if you want it, and we will support you to develop that competence. It is entirely optional. Several of our clinicians work therapeutically only, and that is a legitimate way to build a career here.
SUPERVISION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTWeekly individual supervision with Dr Anna Cohen or a senior member of the clinical team, plus peer supervision, clinical meetings and in-house training. Supervision here is about the work rather than a signature at the end of the month.
If you are working towards clinical endorsement, we provide your board-approved registrar supervision in-house at no cost to you. That is a saving of several thousand dollars across your registrar program, and registrar hours are recognised in how we structure your diary rather than squeezed into the gaps around a full week of clients.
Supervision and clinical meetings run across all three sites, so you are connected to a wider clinical team regardless of where you are based. Working in private practice should not mean working alone.
WHAT WE HANDLE SO YOU DON'TIntake, bookings, billing, rebates, records, reminders and follow-up are managed by our administration team.
Our referral stream is consistent and predominantly private-funded, backed by an established network of schools, paediatricians, GPs and allied health colleagues who already know the practice. You are not building a referral base from scratch or waiting out a slow first quarter, and you are not spending your evenings chasing accounts.
THE THREE ROLESBalmain (Inner West). Our longest-running clinic, with a mature caseload and strong school and paediatric relationships across the inner west.
Waverley (Eastern Suburbs). An established team in a purpose-built clinic, with a steady referral base across the eastern suburbs.
Katoomba (Blue Mountains). Specialist child and adolescent services are scarce in the Mountains, and local families currently travel down to Sydney for them. This is an opportunity to do meaningful work in your own community with the infrastructure, referral systems and supervision of an established practice behind you. If you live locally, this role is worth a conversation.
THE PRACTICAL DETAILTwo to five days per week, with hours you set. Work-from-home for report writing and telehealth where it suits.
Compensation is a percentage of the client fee, rising to $187 per session after all clinic deductions for experienced clinicians. Early-career rates start lower and increase as your caseload and registration status progress. Because our referral stream is consistent and predominantly private-funded, a clinician who wants a full diary can reach strong earnings from early on — the ceiling here is set by how much you want to work, not by how long you have to wait for referrals. We will be specific with you at interview rather than vague in an advertisement.
Our clinics are purpose-built for this population, with room for play, expressive and movement-based work. Not adult consulting rooms with a toy box in the corner.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSEssential:Current AHPRA registration as a psychologist — general, provisional (internship pathway) or registrar.Demonstrated experience in psychological formulation and the delivery of evidence-based interventions with children, adolescents and/or families. Placement experience is accepted for recent graduates.Eligibility for a Medicare provider number, or a clear pathway to one.Current Working with Children Check.Unrestricted Australian working rights.Professional indemnity insurance, or willingness to obtain it.Strong skills in building therapeutic rapport with children and young people, maintaining professional boundaries, and working with families of diverse backgrounds and structures.Sound clinical record-keeping and report-writing skills, and competence with practice management software.Capacity to work autonomously while contributing to a collegial team.Excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to liaise effectively with parents, schools, paediatricians and other providers.Commitment to ethical practice, ongoing professional development and active participation in supervision.
Highly regarded but not required:Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Psychology (Master's or Doctorate).Endorsement in Clinical Psychology, or current registrar status working towards it.Training in play therapy, expressive or creative therapies, sandtray, EMDR, family therapy, or body-based approaches.Experience in private practice, community mental health or school-based settings.Experience in cognitive and educational assessment.

Above all: warmth, curiosity and a genuine liking for the population. Therapy with children has to be engaging before it can be effective.
