About the role

Join a collaborative and highly skilled Anatomical Pathology team where your technical expertise will directly support the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services that make a real difference to patient care. As a Technical Officer / Medical Scientist, you'll contribute to the efficient operation of the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory and FMC Hospital Mortuary, providing specialist technical and scientific support across the department while working alongside experienced pathologists, scientists and technical professionals.

In this varied role, you'll perform routine and complex histopathology procedures, including specialised staining, immunohistochemistry, frozen sections and diagnostic testing, while applying your knowledge to analyse, troubleshoot and continuously improve laboratory processes. You'll also examine, interpret and dissect simple surgical and biopsy specimens using established protocols, contribute to quality assurance and NATA accreditation activities, and play an active role in training and supporting colleagues in an environment committed to excellence, innovation and continuous learning.

We're looking for a motivated and detail-oriented laboratory professional who enjoys working in a collaborative environment and is committed to delivering high-quality Anatomical Pathology services. You will bring:

• Qualifications that meet the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) requirements for a Medical Scientist (AQF Level 7 or equivalent), with relevant pathology studies and experience in Anatomical Pathology and histopathology.
• Demonstrated technical expertise in histopathology techniques, including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, specialised staining, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry, with the ability to accurately examine and gross simple specimens.
• Strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise work, maintain attention to detail, meet deadlines and work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
• Sound knowledge of human anatomy, histotechnology, relevant legislation, NATA accreditation, NPAAC guidelines and laboratory quality systems, together with a commitment to continuous improvement, quality assurance and supporting the development of others.
