Are you a recent graduate, hands-on technical professional or someone with practical industry experience who wants to work on research with a real-world impact?

We’re looking for a Research Assistant to join our team at the University of Newcastle and contribute to innovative research in mineral processing and critical minerals.

This is an opportunity to get hands-on with laboratory work, develop valuable technical skills and contribute to research focused on improving how minerals are processed and recovered.

You don’t need to be an established researcher. We’re looking for someone with a strong work ethic, curiosity, attention to detail and a willingness to learn.

The Role

You’ll work as part of a collaborative research team investigating technologies that could help advance the minerals industry.

Your work will include:

• Preparing and conducting laboratory experiments investigating mineral separation technologies.
• Processing and handling mineral samples.
• Analysing particles and samples before and after separation.
• Collecting, processing and interpreting experimental data.
• Performing calculations and using mathematical techniques to support research outcomes.
• Using laboratory equipment and applying appropriate laboratory techniques.
• Recording experimental results and maintaining accurate research documentation.
• Contributing to reports, research papers and other project documentation.
• Supporting laboratory safety, cleaning and general laboratory organisation.
• Working collaboratively with researchers, technical staff and industry partners.
• Supporting demonstrations, outreach activities and visits from students and research stakeholders.
• Contributing to off-site activities associated with the research and laboratory program.

One week might involve preparing samples and setting up experiments; the next could involve analysing results, performing calculations, documenting findings and discussing what the results mean with the research team.

It’s practical, varied work where you’ll be able to see the connection between what you do in the laboratory and the bigger challenges facing the minerals industry.

About you

You’ll bring:

• A strong work ethic and a willingness to get involved.
• Good mathematical and numerical skills, including the ability to perform calculations and work with data.
• Good computer skills and confidence learning new software and systems.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately record and analyse information.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team while also working independently when required.
• A practical, methodical approach to laboratory work and problem solving.
• Curiosity, reliability, a willingness to learn and excited by the opportunity to do practical work that has a purpose.
• A commitment to laboratory safety and following established procedures.

This fixed term role is full time until August 2027 at a HEW 5 Higher Education Worker Level and is located at Callaghan Campus. We will also consider part-time options of at least 2 days per week. The role may be suitable for an undergraduate student enrolled in the latter phase of their program, ideally Chemical Engineering.
