Teacher Special Education - Hayes Park Public School

Hayes Park Public School serves a growing community in suburban Dapto on the western foreshores of Lake Illawarra. The school's enrolment has steadily increased to around 610 students, up from 588 in 2021. The school consists of 23 mainstream classes and 3 support unit classes catering for students with autism and/or a moderate intellectual disability. These classes are supported by a special education teacher and a Student Learning and Support Officer (SLSO). Additionally, in 2027, Hayes Park Public School will expand to include a preschool, further supporting the educational journey of the local community's children from early learning onwards. 

The student body reflects a diverse and changing demographic, with 9% from non-english speaking background (NESB) and 10% identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

1. Approval to teach special education and/or demonstrated experience teaching students with autism and moderate intellectual disability.
    
2. Demonstrated commitment to student wellbeing and collaboration with others to plan and implement effective strategies for individual learning, with the ability to support students with complex behavioural needs and a strong understanding of trauma-informed practice.
    
3. Demonstrated ability to design and deliver differentiated, date-informed programs that use explicit teaching, evidence-based practice and high expectations to improve academic, social and behavioural outcomes.
    
4. High-level interpersonal skills with the capacity to effectively communicate across all stakeholders within the school context, including students, parents/carers, external agencies and the wider community, to build and enhance a culture of inclusivity.

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

The commencement date for this position will be day 1 of the 2027 school year.
