The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the peak body for unions in Australia. Through the Australian Trade Union Institute (ATUI), we deliver education and capacity building that supports unions to grow, win, and build power for working people.

We are seeking an experienced and creative Online Learning Designer & Educator to lead the design, development and delivery of engaging online learning experiences for union members, delegates and officials across Australia. This is an exciting opportunity to help expand the reach and impact of union education through innovative digital learning, multimedia content and online facilitation.

About the role

Reporting to the Capacity Building Manager, the Online Learning Designer & Educator plays a key role in strengthening education and learning opportunities across the union movement. You will work closely with educators, affiliates, subject matter experts and multimedia specialists to design engaging online courses, webinars and digital learning resources that make high-quality union education accessible to more workers and activists.

This role combines instructional design, online facilitation, learning technology and project management. You will help shape the future of digital learning at the ACTU and support affiliates to build their own online education capabilities.

Key responsibilities include:

• Designing, developing and maintaining high-quality online learning modules and resources within the Learning Management System (LMS)
• Working with the ACTU videographer and subject matter experts to create engaging educational videos and multimedia content
• Designing and delivering live online training, webinars and virtual workshops
• Applying adult learning principles, learner-centred design and accessibility standards across all online education offerings
• Managing LMS administration, reporting, course maintenance and learner engagement data
• Monitoring learner feedback and completion data to continuously improve programs
• Supporting ACTU educators and staff to effectively use online learning technologies and systems
• Translating complex industrial, policy and organising content into engaging digital learning experiences
• Working with affiliates to strengthen and expand online education offerings across the union movement
• Managing end-to-end online learning projects from concept through implementation and evaluation
• Contributing to the planning and development of ATUI education and capacity building initiatives
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with affiliates and other stakeholders
• Keeping abreast of emerging trends and best practice in online learning, educational technology and digital pedagogy.

About you

You are passionate about education and learning and have a strong understanding of how adults learn in digital environments. You are creative, organised and confident using technology to create engaging learning experiences.

You will bring:

• Demonstrated experience designing and developing online learning modules and digital learning resources
• Experience facilitating webinars, online training or virtual workshops
• Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design and learner engagement
• Experience using Learning Management Systems to develop, deliver and manage training programs
• Experience creating educational videos and multimedia content
• Excellent written communication, presentation and facilitation skills
• Strong project management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
• A commitment to accessibility, inclusion and learner-centred design
• The ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders
• A commitment to union values, social justice and collective action.

Desirable

• Experience with video editing, graphic design and multimedia production tools
• Experience working in unions, community organisations, membership-based organisations or education
• Knowledge of emerging online learning technologies and practices.
• Direct or indirect lived experience of cultural diversity and/or disability and the ability to apply this perspective to inclusive learning design.

The ACTU offers a competitive salary range of $121,898 - $142,404 depending on skills and experience, along with:

• Additional 15% superannuation
