The Role

As Head of AI, you'll be aXcelerate's dedicated technical subject matter expert for artificial intelligence, sitting within Engineering. 

You'll lead hands-on delivery of AI-powered product features and AI-assisted software development practices, and lead our AI Squad -  translating AI strategy into working product features and engineering practice, and giving our CTO and other Engineering and Product leaders a trusted technical resource for AI-related decisions.

What you'll be doing: 

• Lead the AI Squad to deliver our “Work-as-a-Service” roadmap, building AI agents capable of taking meaningful action on behalf of users.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Design and customer-facing teams to identify and prioritise AI opportunities that create customer value.
• Champion the effective use of AI throughout the software development lifecycle, guiding Engineering teams on AI-assisted development practices, tooling and workflows.
• Act as the go-to technical SME on AI capabilities, tools and emerging trends, providing input to our AI strategy and roadmap.
• Support the implementation of AI governance frameworks and policies through technical execution, documentation and expertise.
• Act as a technical resource for Engineering and Product teams evaluating or implementing AI use cases, and supporting AI literacy through training and knowledge sharing.
• Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing AI Squad, building a culture of experimentation, innovation and responsible AI usage.
• Manage the AI Squad's budget, roadmap and resource planning, and track AI Squad OKRs and performance metrics.
• Provide regular updates to the CTO on AI Squad initiatives, outcomes, risks and opportunities.

What we're looking for: 

• Demonstrated leadership experience within AI, software engineering, data science, machine learning or related technology disciplines.
• Strong understanding of modern AI technologies, including Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, machine learning and AI-enabled development tools.
• Proven experience delivering technology products or solutions in a SaaS environment, with experience in AI-assisted software development methodologies and tooling.
• Familiarity with data privacy, cybersecurity and regulatory considerations relating to AI.
• Experience building and leading high-performing technical teams, and implementing AI governance, risk management or responsible AI frameworks.
• Strong commercial and strategic thinking skills, with excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to influence and guide senior leaders without direct authority.
• Desirable: experience developing AI-powered SaaS products, or experience within education technology or the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector.
