The Role

As part of the broader Human Resources team, the payroll function is responsible for delivering accurate, timely, and compliant payroll services, while ensuring that appropriate payroll policies, procedures, and systems are effectively maintained and continuously improved.

The Senior Payroll Officer plays a key role in the delivery of end-to-end payroll services within the Aurion Cloud environment. This position requires a high level of technical payroll expertise and is responsible for payroll processing, reporting, compliance, and the maintenance of payroll records. The role also provides responsive, customer-focused support to employees and stakeholders, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality payroll service.

The position encompasses a broad range of payroll activities, including the administration of employee salaries, leave entitlements, superannuation, deductions, and other employment-related payments. The Senior Payroll Officer is also responsible for producing detailed payroll analytics, dashboard reporting, and workforce data insights to support senior executives, governance requirements, and Council reporting obligations. Through these responsibilities, the role contributes to informed decision-making, legislative compliance, and the effective management of employee remuneration and benefits.

Core Responsibilities

Payroll Processing

• Prepare payroll reconciliations, reporting and data analysis, while ensuring payroll records and transactions comply with legislative and organisational requirements
• Coordinate and oversee the day-to-day operations of the payroll team to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of payroll processes, procedures and systems to enhance efficiency, accuracy and compliance. 

Specialist Advice

• Provide accurate, timely and professional payroll advice, information and reporting to employees, managers and other stakeholders. 
• Interpret and apply relevant legislation, policies and procedures, providing guidance on complex payroll matters and employee entitlements. 
• Support the preparation and maintenance of procedure manuals and process checklists to ensure the quality and transparency of payroll transaction processing.

Reporting and Dashboards 

• Provision of regular management reports and dashboards to the Payroll Manager and Head of HR for Executive, Corporate Management Group, line managers in business areas, and a range of external government agencies (including by not restricted to Workplace Gender Equality Agency, Australian Public Service Commission, Parliamentary Questions on Notice and other) , as well as other inputs to support business planning, reporting and risk management.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support the delivery of high-quality payroll services. 
• Undertake additional duties and assume responsibility for other payroll-related functions as directed by the Payroll Manager from time to time.

Team Leadership

• Supervise and provide support and guidance to the Payroll Officer ensuring the processing of a correct and accurate pay run and reporting. 

Position Eligibility

• Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
• All applicants external to AWM that are offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a National Police Check, even if they currently hold a security clearance. The check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.

Mandatory Qualifications and Experience 

• PowerBI qualifications and or demonstrated experience
• Demonstrated experience in the administration of end-to-end payroll services, within the Aurion Cloud Payroll environment, with a strong focus on accuracy, compliance, and customer service
• Payroll processing experience within an APS environment
