Workshop Operations & Technical Manager

About the Role

GN Mechanical & Automotive is looking for an experienced Workshop Operations & Technical Manager to take ownership of the day to day operations and performance of our busy automotive workshop in Broome.

This is a hands on leadership role combining workshop operations, people leadership, commercial awareness and strong automotive technical knowledge.

You will be responsible for keeping the workshop moving, supporting our technicians and Service Advisors, maintaining team accountability and ensuring we continue to deliver high standards of workmanship and customer service.

We are looking for someone with genuine automotive technical experience who can confidently understand vehicle systems, diagnostics and repair requirements, contribute to technical discussions and support the team with practical problem solving.

GN Mechanical & Automotive operates alongside our sister business, Great Northern Logistics, and there will be some natural crossover between the businesses, particularly around fleet maintenance, shared resources and day to day operational coordination. This position remains primarily responsible for the operations and performance of GNM.

This is not a purely office based management position. You will maintain an active presence across the workshop and service operations and be willing to get involved practically within your skills, experience and qualifications when required.

While a Light Vehicle Motor Mechanic qualification would be highly regarded, it is not essential for the right applicant with strong automotive industry experience, mechanical knowledge and demonstrated technical capability.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the day to day operations and overall performance of the workshop

• Manage workflow, WIP, workshop capacity and operational priorities

• Lead, support and maintain accountability across the GNM team

• Provide technical guidance, practical support and problem solving alongside our workshop team

• Monitor productivity, labour efficiency, job turnaround and workshop performance

• Maintain oversight of customer service, quality and workshop standards

• Identify practical improvements that keep the workshop running safely, efficiently and profitably

About You

We are looking for someone who can combine strong people leadership with genuine automotive technical knowledge.

You will be practical, organised and comfortable making decisions. You understand that successfully managing a workshop means being present, knowing what is happening across the operation and building the trust and respect of the people around you.

You will ideally bring:

• Strong automotive mechanical and technical knowledge

• Experience within the automotive, mechanical or related industry

• Leadership, supervisory or operational management experience

• A sound understanding of vehicle systems, diagnostics and repair processes

• Strong communication, organisation and practical problem solving skills

• Commercial awareness and an understanding of workshop performance

• Confidence working with technicians, customers and management

• A hands on attitude and willingness to get involved when required

• Current C Class Driver's Licence

A Light Vehicle Motor Mechanic qualification is highly regarded but not essential for the right person with strong automotive industry experience, technical knowledge and demonstrated capability.

Experience in diagnostics, engine systems, turbocharging or other technical automotive environments would also be highly regarded.
