About the role
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Head of Learning Area - English to join John XXIII College. This is an academic leadership position that plays a crucial role in advancing English education across our secondary school. The Head of Learning Area, will be responsible for leading the English department, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and inclusivity within the learning area. This role offers the opportunity to shape curriculum direction, mentor staff, and have a significant impact on student outcomes and engagement in English studies.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and vision for the English Learning Area, ensuring alignment with the school's educational goals and Catholic values

• Oversee curriculum development, implementation and review to ensure contemporary, engaging and rigorous English programmes that meet or exceed Australian Curriculum standards

• Lead, mentor, support and develop English teaching staff, fostering professional growth through ongoing feedback, collaborative planning and professional development opportunities

• Monitor student progress and achievement in English, utilising data to inform teaching practices and identify intervention strategies where necessary

• Collaborate with other Learning Area leaders to promote interdisciplinary learning and consistent approaches to literacy across the school

• Manage budgets and resources for the English Learning Area, making strategic decisions regarding teaching materials, technology and professional development

• Foster a positive, inclusive and engaging learning environment that encourages student participation, critical thinking and a love of literature and communication

• Contribute to the recruitment, induction and ongoing performance management of English staff

• Liaise with parents, guardians and the broader school community regarding English programmes and student progress

• Maintain knowledge of current pedagogical best practices, educational research and innovations in English teaching

What we're looking for

• A tertiary qualification in English or related discipline, with recognised teaching qualifications and current teacher registration with the Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia

• Substantial experience teaching English at secondary level, with demonstrated expertise in curriculum delivery and student engagement

• Proven leadership experience in an educational setting, ideally as a Head of Learning Area, department head or similar senior teaching position

• Strong understanding of the Australian Curriculum and experience implementing contemporary, evidence-based teaching methodologies

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with staff, students, parents and external stakeholders

• Demonstrated commitment to professional development and continuous improvement, with a capacity to mentor and develop other educators

• Strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to make informed decisions that support student learning and wellbeing

• A commitment to Catholic education values and the ability to integrate faith, culture and Gospel principles into educational practice

• Experience with data analysis and using assessment information to drive curriculum and pedagogical improvements

• Flexibility and resilience, with the capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and support the broader school community

Applicants must actively support and promote the ethos of the College and all teachers are required to have, or be prepared to obtain, necessary accreditation through Catholic Education Western Australia. A current Working with Children card/application and current Teacher Registration Board WA must be submitted at the time of application.
