Program Details

The Maloerroe-ma Pathways Program is designed to address the issue of youth homelessness by providing essential support services. This initiative includes the operation of a day and night drop-in centre specifically tailored for homeless youth and youth at-risk of homelessness in the Darwin area. The program prioritises the creation of culturally safe spaces, ensuring that young individuals have access to the resources and support they need in a welcoming environment.

Social Group: Provide opportunities for the participant to engage in group-based social activities with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders. Activities may include socialising, having conversations, participating in artwork and cultural activities, sharing stories, and taking part in other recreational and community-based activities. The service aims to promote social connection, cultural engagement, reduce social isolation, and support overall wellbeing.

This is a casual position with an average of 24 hours per week (Mon - Fri). Additional hours may be available based on operational requirements and service demand.

Key Responsibilities

OBJECTIVE: To coordinate the planning, preparation, cooking, and delivery of nutritious, high-quality meals for clients of the TWO Programs while ensuring compliance with food safety, legislative, contractual, and organisational requirements.

• Coordinate the day-to-day purchasing, receiving, storage, preparation, cooking, presentation, and delivery of meals in accordance with contractual obligations and organisational standards.
• Develop and review menus in consultation with management to ensure they meet the dietary, nutritional, cultural, and individual needs of clients.
• Ensure all kitchen operations comply with Food Safety Standards, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements, and relevant legislation.
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation of the kitchen, equipment, and food preparation areas.
• Ensure the Food Safety Program is implemented and adhered to, including maintaining accurate food safety records and documentation.;
• Monitor and maintain adequate food and kitchen supplies through effective stock ordering, stock rotation, storage, and inventory control.
• Manage food production efficiently and within the approved food service budget while minimising waste and maintaining quality.
• Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and independently when required, undertaking additional duties as directed by the Program Coordinator or Team Leader.
• Demonstrate professionalism by being punctual, reliable, maintaining industry standards, and presenting a neat and professional appearance.
• Participate in mandatory and professional development training as required, including maintaining an annual influenza vaccination in accordance with organisational policy.
• Maintain respect for Larrakia people and traditional country.

Selection Criteria

• Previous experience in a similar role catering for a minimum of 40 clients per day
• Certificate Commercial Cooking or other relevant qualification
• To respect and respond to the individual needs and preferences of the client’s dietary requirements
• To understand and demonstrate the importance of accurate documentation and confidentiality of client’s details
• Ability to work under limited direction, exercise initiative and apply good time management and organisational skills
• To understand and demonstrate safe work practices and adhere to organisation policies and procedures
• An understanding of nutritional requirements in a health care environment
• A valid Working with Children (OCHRE) Card, Current NT Driver’s Licence (C Class minimum), Current Police check

It would be considered an advantage if applicants also possess:

• Identify as Indigenous
• Understanding of cultural protocols, together with a willingness to work respectfully in accordance with Larrakia and other Indigenous culture
