The Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety is looking for passionate people to join us as Child Safety Officers (CSOs) in Cairns Whether you’re a graduate or changing careers, if you have experience or interest in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or similar — this could be your next step.

What you need to be a CSO

• A Completed Bachelor degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or in a related field with further study or work experience – please see our CSO careers page for further information
• A Queensland BlueCard, is a mandatory requirement to hold before applying for a Child Safety Officer Role - for interstate/international applicants please apply through the Queensland government BlueCard portal, or reach out to the team for further information and advice at Recruitment@families.qld.gov.au
• An Australian Driver’s License, and the legal right to work in Australia

Working in Cairns

In this role, you may travel to nearby towns or occasionally fly to remote areas to support families. While the work can be challenging, the insight you gain into the community and the variety of experiences make it incredibly rewarding and an excellent foundation for your CSO career. — and working here also means you’ll receive additional regional incentives.

These include:

• Relocation support and assistance (negotiable at panel)
• $2,500 annual remote and regional allowance
• $50.70 fortnightly locality allowance
• 5 Additional days of Annual Leave

What does being a CSO mean?

As a CSO, you’ll be a voice for children and young people, ensuring their safety and wellbeing under the Child Protection Act 1999. You’ll:

• Work closely with families, caregivers, and community organisations
• Deliver statutory child protection services, including assessment, intervention, casework, and case management
• Attending court and writing affidavits
• Working with partner agencies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations
• Provide safe, culturally informed, and respectful support to families from diverse backgrounds

What you get for becoming a CSO:

• PO3 Starting salary of $102,817 - $111,975
• 12.75% superannuation

2. - The directive relating to recruitment and selection provides that applicants for public sector roles must be informed of any suitability assessments that may be required to determine the person's suitability for employment as a public sector employee.
