Geotechnical Engineer

As a Geotechnical Engineer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient extraction of ore by providing specialist geotechnical advice across our open pit mining operations. Working alongside Mining, Geology, Survey, Drill & Blast and Mine Planning teams, you’ll use your technical expertise to manage geotechnical risks, monitor ground conditions and contribute to practical mine design solutions that keep our people safe and our operation performing at its best.

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will provide specialist geotechnical support across a broad range of mining activities. You’ll be responsible for assessing, monitoring and managing rock mass behaviour, slope stability, ground control risks and void management while contributing to mine design and operational planning. This is a hands-on technical role where you’ll combine field work, data analysis and collaboration with operational teams to ensure compliance with the Ground Control Management Plan and deliver practical, risk-based geotechnical solutions that support safe, productive mining.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Provide daily geotechnical support to mining operations and mine planning teams.
• Monitor compliance with the Ground Control Management Plan and recommend improvements to work practices that minimise geotechnical risk.
• Develop and maintain geotechnical risk registers, Critical Controls and Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs).
• Conduct routine inspections, identify ground control hazards and communicate recommendations to operational teams.
• Investigate geotechnical incidents, failures and near misses, identifying root causes and preventative actions.
• Maintain site geotechnical monitoring systems, databases and instrumentation.
• Monitor and interpret data from slope radar, prisms, piezometers, extensometers and other monitoring equipment.
• Complete stability assessments using empirical, kinematic and numerical analysis techniques.
• Carry out regular pit mapping and collect, validate and interpret geotechnical data.
• Prepare monthly and ad hoc technical reports on monitoring, design recommendations and geotechnical performance.
• Contribute to the ongoing review and improvement of the Ground Control Management Plan.
• Coordinate geotechnical drilling, investigation and data collection programs.
• Manage contractors and specialist consultants undertaking geotechnical investigations.
• Build strong working relationships with Mining, Survey, Geology, Drill & Blast and Planning teams.
• Deliver geotechnical awareness training and provide coaching to operational personnel.

About You:

You’re a technically capable Geotechnical Engineer who enjoys working closely with operations to solve real-world mining challenges. You combine strong analytical skills with practical decision-making and communicate technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders.

You’ll also bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Geotechnical or Mining) or Geology with postgraduate qualifications and/or experience in Geomechanics.
• Sound understanding of rock mechanics, slope stability and open pit ground control.
• Experience with geotechnical monitoring systems and instrumentation.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical reporting skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• Current Australian Driver’s Licence.
• Commitment to maintaining high safety standards in an operational mining environment.

Desirable Experience

• Experience using Deswik software.
• Proficiency with geotechnical software including Rocscience Suite, Dips, Slide, RocFall or equivalent.
• Experience with slope radar, prism monitoring systems and other geotechnical instrumentation.
• Previous experience in an open pit mining environment.
