Assistant Manager

Tyranny of Distance is an independent neighbourhood bar built around its incredible community, and we're looking for an Assistant Manager to help lead our next stage.

This role is ideal for someone ready to take the next step in their hospitality career.

We're the kind of local where regulars know each other by name, the drinks are approachable, and the atmosphere is warm, unpretentious and always buzzing. Our predominantly young local crowd has helped shape the venue into a genuine community hub, and with an expanding food menu and exciting plans for the future, we're looking for an experienced Assistant Manager to help lead the next stage of our growth.

You'll work closely with the General Manager and owners to oversee day-to-day operations, lead shifts, develop staff and ensure the venue continues to operate at a high standard.

Success in this role is measured by the strength of your team, consistency of service, operational excellence and your contribution to the venue's commercial performance.

Culture & Leadership

• Deliver warm, knowledgeable and consistent hospitality.
• Resolve customer concerns professionally and confidently.
• Maintain exceptional presentation standards throughout the venue.
• Support ongoing staff product knowledge across food, wine, cocktails and beer.
• Help maintain the atmosphere and service standards Tyranny of Distance is known for.

Financial Performance

• Deliver labour targets through effective shift management.
• Assist with stock ordering, stocktakes and minimising wastage.
• Help control beverage costs and discounts.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and increase revenue.

Operations & Compliance

• Lead services across busy evenings and events.
• Ensure opening, closing and cash handling procedures are completed accurately.
• Maintain venue systems, documentation and operational standards.
• Ensure compliance with RSA, liquor licensing, OH&S and company policies.
• Report incidents accurately and proactively identify operational improvements.
• Assist with rostering and day-to-day administration as required.

You'll ideally bring:

• At least 2 years' experience in a supervisory or management role within a quality bar, restaurant or pub.
• A genuine passion for hospitality and guest experience.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Confidence leading busy services while remaining calm under pressure.
• Current Victorian RSA.
• Availability to work evenings, weekends and public holidays.
