Details: Legal Aid is seeking suitably qualified Lawyers across all Practices for current and expected vacancies.
Working at Legal Aid Commission (ACT) provides an opportunity to contribute to a just society by delivering high-quality legal services to people experiencing disadvantage or vulnerability, supporting access to justice and helping clients to understand and assert their rights.
Legal Aid has four in-house practice areas
Family Practice lawyers advise on parenting arrangements, separation/divorce and property division, child protection, and court applications and advocacy.
Early Intervention Practice lawyers advise on domestic and family violence through FASS, FLDS and the Health Justice Partnership, including Family Violence Orders and referrals to non-legal support.
Civil Justice Practice lawyers provide advice, duty and ongoing representation across courts, ACAT and the AAT, spanning Discrimination, Human Rights, Tenancy, Employment, NDIS, Migration, Mental Health, Elder Abuse and Guardianship.
Criminal Practice lawyers provide advice, duty and ongoing representation across pleas, mentions, bail applications, defended hearings and trial instructions.
About You
Graduate Lawyer (Legal 1)
A Graduate Lawyer is motivated, early-career lawyer keen to grow while making a real difference for vulnerable people in the ACT. You bring initiative, sound judgement and a collaborative, team-focused approach. You have sound organisational skills to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines, highly developed written and oral communication skills, and advocacy skills (or the ability to quickly develop them). You have knowledge of ACT and Commonwealth law and procedure, and the ability to work respectfully with a diverse range of clients.
Lawyer (Legal 2)
A Legal 2 Lawyer is capable, committed lawyer ready to advise clients, deliver community legal education and appear in courts and tribunals and to mentor graduates along the way. You bring initiative, sound judgement and a collaborative approach. You have sound organisational skills to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines, highly developed written and oral communication skills, and advocacy skills (or the ability to quickly develop them).
Supervising Lawyer (Legal 3)
A Legal 3 Lawyer is an experienced lawyer and confident leader, ready to guide a team while maintaining your own practice. You bring initiative, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to developing others. You have developed organisational skills to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines, highly developed written and oral communication skills and well-developed advocacy skills, and thorough knowledge of ACT and Commonwealth law (five+ years' post-admission experience highly regarded). You have a proven ability to lead, mentor and coach others and drive performance.
