Role Overview:

Join Smokeball’s AI Team as a Senior Engineer and help shape the future of legal technology. Working on Archie and our growing suite of AI-powered products, you’ll play a key role in designing, building and scaling intelligent features and AI agents that help legal professionals work more efficiently and deliver better outcomes for their clients.

As a senior member of the team, you’ll take ownership of technical solutions from concept through to production, partnering closely with Product, Design, QA and Engineering to deliver high-quality, customer-focused experiences. You’ll contribute to architectural decisions, champion engineering best practices, and ensure our AI solutions are reliable, scalable and secure. You’ll also support the growth of other engineers through mentoring and collaboration while helping drive a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain AI-powered features and agents that deliver value to our customers.
• Own the end-to-end delivery of features, enhancements and bug fixes from architecture through to production.
• Collaborate with Product, Design and QA to deliver high-quality, customer-focused solutions.
• Use AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, quality and delivery speed.
• Ensure AI systems are reliable, observable and scalable, considering evaluation frameworks, performance, cost and risk.
• Review code, provide technical guidance and mentor engineers across the team.
• Contribute to architectural decisions, engineering standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Proactively identify and communicate risks, roadblocks and opportunities to stakeholders.

About You

• 6+ years’ experience in a software engineering role within a cloud-based SaaS environment.
• Experience building AI-powered products, AI agents or LLM-based applications.
• Strong skills in JavaScript/TypeScript, React (or similar frameworks), Node.js and relational databases.
• Hands-on experience with AWS and cloud-native architectures.
• Experience using AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, testing, deployment and modern engineering practices.
• Passion for clean, maintainable code and delivering great user experiences.
• Experience coaching, mentoring and supporting other engineers.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
• Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to solve complex customer problems.
