In the Northern Territory, we deliver Financial Counselling, Capability and Wellbeing services across Central Australia. We are also proud to lead the Central Intake Service, a Territory-wide initiative improving access to support for people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. 

Our work in the NT builds on our strong foundation in South Australia, where we provide services such as foster care, homelessness support, emergency relief, family support, counselling and allied health services. About You:

Are you ready to make a real difference in the heart of Central Australia?

We are seeking passionate, community-minded Financial Counsellors or Financial Counsellor Interns to join our team in Alice Springs. This is more than a desk-based role, it’s a dynamic and rewarding position that involves working alongside remote Aboriginal communities, supporting people to build financial confidence, independence and wellbeing.

You will deliver high-quality, confidential financial counselling or education, helping individuals and families experiencing vulnerability to address financial challenges, make informed choices and strengthen long-term financial resilience. The role also includes outreach work, travelling to town camps and remote communities across the Central Australian service area.

Lutheran Care provides financial counselling, financial literacy programs and emergency relief across Alice Springs and surrounding regions.

About the Financial Counsellor Intern Role:

The Financial Counsellor Intern supports Aboriginal people in engaging with Lutheran Care's programs and accessing financial wellbeing services. 

This includes:

• Provide on-ground support to help people understand financial concepts.
• Assisting with the development and delivery of budgeting and financial literacy sessions. 
• Ensuring communication is culturally sensitive.

Key Responsibilities: 

Financial Capability & Emergency Relief Services

• Provide one-on-one financial capability support. 
• Conduct non-accredited workshops on financial capability. 
• Deliver emergency relief services to clients in crisis. 
• Engage positively with Aboriginal people and deliver culturally appropriate services. 
• Participate in remote travel to provide support in communities. 

Referrals, Networking, and Advocacy

• Develop positive relationships with internal and external services. 
• Make referrals appropriate to clients' needs. 
• Engage in local partnerships and networks. 

Record Keeping 

• Ensure accurate information is collected and stored. 
• Complete comprehensive case notes and reports. 

Professional Development

• Attend compulsory training and professional development and opportunities
• Must be studying Diploma of Financial Counselling 

 

About the Financial Counsellor Role:

The Financial Counsellor will provide confidential financial counselling and education to clients, aiming to build financial resilience among vulnerable populations.

This includes:

• Offering high-level financial advice and education.
• Collaborating with the Financial Wellbeing team.
• Promoting financial literacy and resilience.

Key Responsibilities: 

Client Assessment and Support: Provide accurate financial information and support. Prepare financial statements and plans for clients, negotiate with creditors and advocate on behalf of the clients while empowering clients through improved financial management skills.

Professional Development: Maintain qualifications through professional development and attend clinical supervision as required.

Service Delivery: Ensure high-quality, best practice support to clients. Deliver timely triage and emergency relief services and produce and submit reports on time.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

Essential Criteria:

• NDIS Workers Screening Check
• Ochre Card
• National Police Clearance
• Diploma of Financial Counselling **applicants without this will not be considered for the Financial Counsellor role**

 You’ll also bring:

• A respectful, client-centred and culturally aware approach
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust and rapport
• A compassionate, non-judgemental approach to supporting people experiencing financial hardship
• Confidence working independently and as part of a team
• Flexibility and willingness to travel within the Central Australian region
