About the Role
This position is based in Capella Sydney reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Engineering Supervisor is responsible for the smooth operation of the hotel's engineering facilities and physical plant during assigned shifts.
This hands-on leadership role oversees the daily activities of the engineering team, ensuring repairs, maintenance works and preventative maintenance programs are completed efficiently and safely. The successful candidate will lead by example, maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence while supporting colleagues across the hotel to deliver an exceptional guest experience.
The Role
Lead, supervise and support the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department, ensuring all maintenance activities are completed efficiently, safely and in line with Capella's luxury service standards.
Oversee the operation, maintenance and repair of all hotel plant, equipment and building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire and life safety systems, and Building Management Systems (BMS).
Coordinate and monitor the hotel's preventative maintenance program to ensure optimal performance, minimise equipment downtime and maximise asset lifespan.
Allocate, prioritise and monitor engineering work orders, ensuring tasks are completed within required timeframes and to the highest quality standards.
Conduct routine inspections of plant rooms, back-of-house areas, guestrooms and public spaces to identify maintenance requirements and address potential issues proactively.
Provide hands-on technical support and troubleshooting for breakdowns and emergencies, ensuring prompt resolution with minimal disruption to hotel operations and guest experiences.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports, operating logs and compliance documentation in accordance with company policies and statutory requirements.
Support the Director of Engineering with the planning and execution of projects, capital works, refurbishments and ongoing improvement initiatives across the property.
Liaise with external contractors and service providers, ensuring all works are completed safely, professionally and in accordance with agreed service standards and timelines.
Monitor stock levels of engineering materials, tools and spare parts, ensuring adequate inventory is maintained to support operational requirements.
Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with Workplace Health & Safety regulations, risk management protocols and hotel safety procedures.
Train, coach and mentor engineering team members, fostering technical development, accountability, teamwork and high colleague engagement.
Build strong working relationships with operational departments to ensure engineering services effectively support the guest experience and business needs.
Participate as a key member of the hotel's Emergency Response and Fire Safety Team, responding to incidents and ensuring preparedness across the property.
Assist with departmental rostering, shift coverage and resource planning to ensure operational efficiency and continuous engineering support.
Talent Profile
If you have 5+ years of experience working within a hotel Engineering Department as a Duty Technician, Shift Engineer or Handyperson and are looking to take the next step in your career, we welcome your application.
Trade qualification in Electrical, Mechanical or related discipline preferred.
Strong knowledge of building services and systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing and building management systems (BMS).
Experience managing preventative maintenance programs and responding to equipment breakdowns.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and maintenance documentation.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capabilities.
Excellent organisational and time management skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Demonstrated leadership ability with a collaborative and service-focused approach.
Understanding of workplace health, safety and fire compliance requirements.
