Museum Curator

• Seeking an experienced, passionate and creative curator to advance our earth science museum’s reputation and impact.
• Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 3 years.
• Base salary range: $108,413 – $120,287 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The School of Earth and Oceans encompasses a broad range of Earth Science disciplines (geoscience, hydrogeology, geodata analytics, oceanography), Coastal and Ocean Engineering (hydrodynamics, geotechnics) and with a strong focus on research-led teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate majors and courses. Our location in Western Australia with its ancient geological record and magnificent coastline also provides tremendous opportunities for terrestrial and marine field-based teaching and learning.

The E. de C. Clarke Earth Science Museum houses significant research collections including important paleontological specimens, rock materials, maps and theses recording the results of geological discovery and research in WA since the mid-1850s, the establishment of UWA in 1913 and the first Geology Department, through to present day research. The Museum’s displays and galleries are the focal point for outreach activities for earth sciences and UWA more broadly. Loans of specimens and samples to UWA researchers, national and international researchers, government and industry personnel are also managed by the Museum.

The School is also seeking to develop more digital interactive elements to further promote earth sciences to the wider community.

About the opportunity

• Curate research materials in the collections using modern museum approaches and maintain and develop the Earth Science Museum.
• Work with staff and students to ensure curation of samples related to student theses and publications.
• Play a role in outreach and important opportunities to showcase UWA science.

About you

• Relevant tertiary qualification or demonstrated equivalent competency.
• Substantial relevant experience in curation at an appropriate level.
• Proficiency in a range of computing skills including digitisation and management system software (e.g. Emu). 
• Ability to supervise staff, volunteers and WIL students.
• Demonstrated ability in implementing a range of policies and procedures to support teaching and research from a scientific perspective.
