Senior Lawyer/Special Counsel - Intellectual Property & Commercial Law

About us

brandU Legal has been advising on trade marks and IP since 2009, from Sydney's Northern Beaches with access to a City office. We act for Australian businesses protecting their brands at home and overseas, and for international clients bringing theirs into Australia. International trade mark law and procedure is where we're strongest although we also advise on broader IP matters and commercial law matters.

The role

The practice is growing and we're looking for a senior hand to grow with it.

This is a part-time role (days and hours negotiable), but is one with real substance: full carriage of your own matters, direct client relationships, and genuine input into how the firm develops. You'd run complex IP and commercial work end to end, supervise junior staff, and help build the practice. An existing client base would be highly regarded for this role together with experience in identifying new opportunities and assisting the principal to onboard new clients.

What we're looking for

• Australian practising certificate and at least 8 years PAE

• Extensive knowledge of Australian trade mark and IP law

• Solid knowledge of international trade mark and IP practice

• Commercial law experience across general business matters

• Ability to run complex IP and commercial matters independently

• A track record of identifying and onboarding new business

• An existing client base to bring to the firm would be highly regarded

• Experience supervising a paralegal or junior lawyer

• Strategic thinking, with advice that's commercially practical as well as legally sound

• The ability to explain legal issues plainly to non-lawyers

• A proactive, adaptable approach and the confidence to work autonomously across a broad remit

• An eye for opportunities to automate, digitise and streamline how we work

• Someone who leads with professionalism, empathy and accountability, and who genuinely enjoys working in a small, close-knit team

• Must love dogs, music in the office and cheeky staff lunches
