Design Architect – High-End Residential & Development Projects

Archmap Architecture is seeking a Design Architect to join our Melbourne design team.

Archmap works across high-end residential, townhouse, apartment and development-led projects. Our team is involved from early feasibility and concept design through to town planning, building permit documentation, consultant coordination and construction support.

We are looking for a designer with a strong architectural eye who can take projects from early ideas and feasibility through concept design, town planning and design development, while working closely with our Design Director, clients, consultants and documentation team.

About the Role

As a Design Architect, you will work closely with the Design Director and project teams to develop the architectural direction of projects from feasibility and concept design through town planning and design development.

You will have a key role in developing concepts, testing design options, preparing client presentations, resolving building form and planning outcomes, and maintaining the design intent as projects progress into documentation and construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to concept design and architectural design development for high-end residential, townhouse, apartment and development-led projects.

• Develop strong architectural concepts responding to site, context, planning controls, client brief and commercial requirements.

• Prepare feasibility studies, site analysis, massing studies and alternative design options.

• Develop building form, façade composition, material palettes, spatial planning and overall architectural character.

• Prepare and present high-quality client presentations, design proposals and visual material.

• Work closely with the Design Director to establish and develop the design direction of projects.

• Prepare and coordinate architectural packages for town planning applications.

• Respond to planning feedback and work collaboratively with town planners and other consultants to achieve strong design and planning outcomes.

• Translate approved concepts into well-resolved design development packages.

• Work closely with the documentation team to ensure the original design intent is maintained through detailed documentation.

• Review architectural drawings and consultant information for consistency with the approved design.

• Coordinate with consultants during the design process.

• Attend client, consultant and design meetings and clearly communicate architectural ideas.

• Participate in design reviews and contribute to the architectural direction and design culture of the practice.

• Review materials, finishes, façade details and key architectural elements during later project stages.

• Where appropriate, mentor junior designers and graduates and provide design direction to project teams.

Required Skills and Experience

• Master of Architecture or equivalent qualification.

• 8–10+ years post-graduate architectural experience.

• Strong experience in high-end residential, townhouse, apartment or commercial projects.

• Strong Revit documentation skills.

• Good SketchUp and 3D modelling capability

• Good understanding of Victorian town planning processes, NCC, Australian Standards and relevant building regulations.

• Strong design, documentation and consultant coordination skills.

• Ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines and project priorities.

• Strong attention to detail and willingness to take ownership of work.

• Good written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively with directors, clients, consultants and internal project teams.

• Must have full working rights in Australia without restrictions.

Preferred but Not Essential

• Registered Architect in Victoria.

• Mandarin language skills.

• Experience in design-and-build or developer-led projects.

• Experience coordinating with offshore drafting, interior or joinery teams.

• Rendering or visual presentation skills.
