About the role
About the Company and our people
Optimal Group is the Authorised Capstone Energy+ Distributor and Service Provider for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Capstone Energy+ is a global leader in microturbine power generation for grid-connected cogeneration and trigeneration, as well as stand-alone power applications.
Optimal Group is a privately owned company with hands-on management and an open, friendly workplace. You will join experienced professionals in the green and renewable energy sector during a period of continued growth, including our expansion into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
You will be supported by our friendly and dedicated Service Team, with structured product and OEM training to help you develop and maintain competency across the equipment in the Optimal service fleet.
About the role
We are seeking a talented A Grade Electrician to join our field service team. This role will suit a practical and self-motivated technician with excellent troubleshooting and fault-finding skills, experience working with inverters and control systems, strong mechanical aptitude, and a genuine interest in solving complex equipment problems.
The successful candidate will be able to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation, use approved software tools and equipment performance data to diagnose faults, and apply a structured, evidence-based approach to problem solving. You will be comfortable maintaining, testing, repairing, verifying and commissioning electrical and mechanical equipment while maintaining a strong focus on safety and customer service.
Your day-to-day work will include scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on Optimal-supported products, remote and on-site troubleshooting, reviewing equipment performance data, commissioning and supporting OEM equipment, and communicating with customers and internal stakeholders. As Optimal Group expands into BESS, the role will also provide opportunities to develop capability in battery systems, inverters and associated power-conversion equipment.
Regular travel is an essential part of this position. You will travel to customer sites across regional Victoria, interstate and international locations, including regular overnight stays and periods working away from home. You must be willing and able to travel at short notice in response to business and customer needs, and to work independently at remote and customer-controlled sites.
The position is based from our Mulgrave office and reports to the Technical Services Manager. You will work closely with the Service Administrator, Spare Parts and Warehouse Supervisor, Service Technicians, Customers, and the Optimal Projects team.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, fault finding, repair and commissioning on Capstone microturbines, associated equipment and other Optimal-supported products.
• Undertake remote troubleshooting using approved software tools and review equipment performance data to identify faults and support technical decisions.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, control wiring diagrams, OEM manuals, work instructions, troubleshooting guides, service bulletins and technical notices.
• Commission and support OEM equipment in accordance with Optimal Project Group and OEM requirements.
• Complete accurate and timely service job records, including site and equipment configuration updates where required.
• Prepare and submit OEM Field Service Reports and Optimal Customer Service Reports for every job within the required timeframe.
• Provide daily job-status updates to Fleet Maintenance Control and the customer representative.
• Immediately advise of parts requirements or shortages and maintain accurate accountability, security, tagging and return of issued parts.
• Maintain and secure company vehicles and tooling, report damage or loss, and complete tooling loan records when taking workshop tooling to site.
• Supervise apprentices, trades assistants and subcontractors as required, including technical and safety oversight.
• Complete weekly timesheets and job-related expense reporting accurately and on time.
• Participate in the Fleet Service on-call support roster after completing the required training and competency requirements.
• Comply with all Optimal and customer HSEQ requirements, including mandated PPE and timely reporting of incidents.
• Undertake training and field support for BESS, battery inverters and related equipment as this service capability develops.
Travel and Remote Work Requirements
• Willingness and capacity to undertake regular overnight travel and work away from home.
• Availability to travel at short notice in line with business and customer requirements.
• Ability to travel to regional, interstate and international customer sites.
• Ability to work independently at remote and customer-controlled sites.
• Flexibility to work outside normal metropolitan working patterns when required for field service activities.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential Skills:
• Current A Grade Electrician licence.
• Proven electrical troubleshooting, fault-finding, testing, verification and problem-solving experience.
• Experience with inverters, control systems wiring and electrical equipment.
• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, drawings and technical documentation.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to work on machinery and integrated electro-mechanical equipment.
• Ability to use equipment data, fault logs, trends and software tools to diagnose problems and support corrective actions.
• Type B Gas Licence, or the willingness and ability to obtain one.
• The ability to complete electronic service reporting accurately.
• Willingness and ability to successfully complete OEM training and obtain and renew OEM certification across the Optimal service fleet.
• Full drivers licence.
• Current passport with no restrictions that would prevent required travel.
• Ability to participate in an on-call roster following training and competency approval.
Desirable Skills:
• Three or more years of experience in a service-based organisation.
• Solar Accreditation Australia accreditation for Grid Connected Battery Systems, or the willingness and ability to obtain the applicable accreditation.
• Experience with BESS, battery inverters, power-conversion systems or grid-connected energy equipment.
• Installation of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas certification.
• Experience with PLCs, industrial control systems, remote communications, LANs or mobile WANs.
• Experience in power generation, cogeneration or trigeneration.
• High Risk Work licences such as forklift or basic rigging.
• Working with Children Check.
• Working at Heights certification.
• First Aid and LVR
What we offer
An attractive salary package is on offer, including a fully maintained company vehicle, laptop, mobile phone, uniform and all required tooling. Additional allowances apply when participating in the on-call roster, when traveling and working away from home.
Standard working hours are Monday to Thursday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, with an early finish on Friday from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. Field service, on-call and travel requirements may require work outside these hours.
Applicants must have the right to work in Australia and be able to meet the licensing, safety, customer-site and travel requirements of the position.
