About the Role

• Location: Canberra - ACT , Brisbane - QLD, Melbourne - VIC
• Contract Length: 12-month initial contract with a potential 12-month extension option
• Hours: 37.5 hours per week
• Clearance Required: Baseline Security Clearance

Randstad is seeking an experienced EL1 Assistant Director (Policy & Legal) to join a key Australian Government department.

In this role, you will provide high-level policy, legislative, and regulatory advice to support critical legislative reform initiatives. You will lead complex policy analysis, develop strategic positions and implementation strategies, and build strong relationships across government and key sector stakeholders to support core regulatory functions.

• Legislative & Policy Reform: Lead the development, review, and reform of key legislation, regulations, and policy frameworks.
• Strategic Policy Advice: Provide high-level, evidence-based policy and legislative advice on emerging regulatory, operational, and strategic issues.
• Executive Briefing & Submissions: Prepare high-quality briefs, submissions, Cabinet-related materials, correspondence, and executive papers.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Develop consultation strategies and lead engagement activities across government agencies, regulatory bodies, and external sector stakeholders.
• Project & Risk Management: Manage complex policy projects, identify legislative/regulatory risks, and formulate effective mitigation strategies.
• Implementation & Governance: Support change management, guidance, and governance processes for legislative reforms.

• Policy & Legislative Expertise: Demonstrated experience in leading legislative development, policy analysis, and regulatory reform within an Australian Government context.
• Written Communication & Briefing: Exceptional ability to draft high-level executive papers, ministerial briefs, policy submissions, and consultation materials.
• Stakeholder Management: Proven track record of building and managing productive relationships across cross-agency, state/territory, and external sector environments.
• Strategic Project Delivery: Capability to manage complex reform projects, monitor milestones, manage risk, and deliver within tight timeframes.
• Security Clearance: Active Baseline Security Clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one.
