Financial Capability Worker

We are currently looking for a Financial Capability Worker to join our Financial Wellbeing Team on a full-time basis. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, inclusive, and experienced financial counselling and capability team. The Financial Wellbeing team supports people in our diverse community who are experiencing financial hardship and barriers to navigating financial systems. The Financial Capability Worker supports individuals and families to build financial resilience and capability through education, coaching, and access to resources. The role complements SECL’s financial counselling and housing support services, focusing on prevention, empowerment, and long-term wellbeing, financial stability and inclusion. This role is based across SECL locations, including Dandenong, Springvale, Cranbourne, and other sites as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver one-on-one financial capability coaching and group education sessions tailored to diverse community needs.

• Support clients to develop budgeting skills, understand financial products, and navigate financial systems.

• Collaborate with SECL’s financial counsellors, housing workers, and community engagement teams to provide wraparound support.

• Identify and refer clients to appropriate internal and external services, including financial counselling, community legal services, mental health, and other relevant services to meet client needs.

• Co-design and deliver culturally appropriate financial literacy programs in partnership with community leaders.

• Applying a disciplined approach to data entry in line with SECL guidelines and ensuring privacy and confidentiality compliance.

• Facilitating a culturally safe and innovative work environment that values diversity and inclusion. Participate in outreach activities, Bring Your Bills Days, community events, and stakeholder engagement.

• Uphold SECL’s values of inclusion, respect, and empowerment in all aspects of work.

• Actively supporting the Financial Wellbeing Team to achieve strategic objectives established for the organisation, inclusive of, identifying and reporting emerging trends and unmet needs within front line service delivery.

• Contribute to the achievement of SECL’s Strategic Plan through organisational participation, enthusiasm for change projects and active support for service integration across programs and teams.

Mandatory

• Certificate III or higher in Community Services Work.

• Completion of financial literacy education units, or willingness to undertake:

• CHCEDU005: Identify financial literacy education needs
• CHCEDU006: Improve fundamental financial literacy skills
• CHCEDU007: Provide group education on consumer credit and debt

• Diploma-qualified candidates must complete the above financial literacy units.

• Experience facilitating education sessions or workshops for individuals or groups, especially those experiencing financial stress, family violence, or from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

• Strong understanding of financial wellbeing concepts and barriers faced by vulnerable communities.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural competence.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

• Sound organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.

• Commitment to social justice and human-centered practice.

Desirable

• New or graduate financial counsellors are strongly encouraged to apply.

• Lived experience or deep understanding of multicultural communities in Melbourne’s south-east.

• Knowledge of financial abuse, family violence, MARAM frameworks and trauma-informed practice.

• Demonstrated experience in community support and case work coordination.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural competence with the ability to work effectively across diverse communities.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.

• Commitment to social justice and human-centred practice.

• Experience using client management systems and digital tools (e.g., Microsoft 365, Excel).

• Fluency in a language other than English.

• Experience in working with women who have experienced family violence, and people with CALD backgrounds is an advantage.

• Knowledge of contemporary practice frameworks and micro skills and a strong commitment to working in an integrated way with diverse communities.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake Safety Screening checks prior to commencement of employment including a national police record check and valid Working with Children Check.
