With the highest number of accredited criminal law specialists of any Victorian firm, Doogue + George provides access to leading legal resources aimed at avoiding unjust sentences and wrongful convictions. The team collaborates closely with other lawyers whose clients have been charged by regulators or police and is well known for its work in high-profile cases involving public figures and media personalities.Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Criminal Defence Lawyer role based in Melbourne, VIC. The lawyer will manage a diverse criminal and regulatory caseload, including advising clients on their rights, preparing legal strategies, and appearing in court at various jurisdictions. Day-to-day responsibilities include drafting and reviewing legal documents, conducting legal research, analysing evidence, and briefing or instructing counsel where appropriate. The role involves direct client contact, including taking instructions, providing clear and timely updates, and guiding clients through complex proceedings. The lawyer will also work collaboratively with colleagues and external practitioners, contribute to case conferences, and support the firm’s reputation for high-quality defence work in both routine and high-profile matters.QualificationsMore than 4 years post qualification experienceAdmission to practice as a lawyer in Australia and a current Australian practising certificate, with demonstrated experience in criminal defence or litigation.Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret legislation, case law, and regulatory frameworks.Excellent written advocacy skills, including drafting indictments, submissions, correspondence, and other court and client documents.Confident oral advocacy and courtroom skills, with experience appearing in contested hearings, trials, and interlocutory applications.Proven client relationship skills, including clear communication, empathy, confidentiality, and the ability to manage sensitive and complex matters.Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment and work with external counsel and other firms on multi-party or complex cases.Strong organisational and time-management abilities, including managing concurrent files, meeting deadlines, and maintaining accurate file records.Familiarity with white-collar crime, regulatory investigations, and jury trial practice is highly desirable.Commitment to ethical practice, access to justice, and ongoing professional development; specialist accreditation in criminal law or progress toward it is an advantage.
