About the role

The Director, Audit supports the Department’s Chief Audit Executive (CAE) by leading the day-to-day operations of the internal audit function to enable effective delivery of independent, systematic and objective reviews and appraisals of financial, operational and management systems, processes, functions and activities within the Department.

The role oversees the delivery of the annual internal audit plan, the quality assurance and improvement program covering all aspects of the internal audit activity to ensure compliance with NSW Government and Global Internal Auditing Standards requirements and is responsible for leading the implementation and continuous improvement of the Fraud and Corruption Control Framework.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in leading and delivering a high-performing audit function within large, complex and politically sensitive environments in a public sector setting. You possess strong ethical standards and integrity, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships at all levels of the department and with external stakeholders.

As a leader you will join an executive team focused on driving improved ways of working to deliver meaningful and long-lasting impact. You will be collaborative, courageous, agile, and disciplined about delivering outcomes for the students of NSW.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Appropriate professional certifications and qualifications (recognised by the Institute of Internal Auditors, CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australian and New Zealand) and demonstrated high-level experience for the oversight of a highly effective internal audit function.
• Deep technical skills and extensive experience in developing and executing high quality and relevant internal audit programs including planning, fieldwork, reporting, and review through to sign-off and completion.
• Demonstrated extensive experience at a senior level in the management of a large, complex organisation, working closely with and providing strategic advice to senior executives, ARC members and external providers in providing timely assurance.
• Detailed knowledge of public sector accounting practices and requirements and best in class risk-based audit methodologies and practices, including information technology audit principles.
• Comprehensive knowledge of key state and/or commonwealth legislation related to audit’s assurance over compliance activities and fraud and corruption control frameworks.
  Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department’s Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.
• Hold a valid clearance to work with Children (Working with Children Check).
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.

As a condition of employment, successful candidates who have not previously worked for the department will be required to provide a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) Clearance number. This option would allow the WWCC to naturally expire without further communication needed with the employee. The employer obligations under the WWCC would apply for duration of the WWCC’s validity (up to 5 years).
