Aboriginal Training Consultant - Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes

• VPS grade 5 - $116,413 - $128,631 plus superannuation.

The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking Two Aboriginal Training Consultants within our Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes team.

This is an Aboriginal designated position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.

About the Business Unit

Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes lead the design, development, implementation and monitoring of Corrections Victoria policies, programs and services aimed at reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the Victorian correctional system and manage initiatives related to the Safer prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities reform agenda. The division is made up of three teams Workforce Capability and Cultural Reform, Naalamba Ganbu and Nerrlinggu Yilam and Aboriginal Operational Strategic Support. This role sits within the Aboriginal Operational Strategic Support which is responsible for policy, contracts and procurement, governance and secretariat functions and planning and reporting for key programs and services.

About the role:

The Aboriginal Training Consultant is responsible for delivering the “Working with Aboriginal People in Prison" training component for prison officers. This role ensures staff are equipped with the cultural capabilities required to operate effectively within Corrections Victoria's complex environments.

Working within a multi-disciplinary team of consultants, trainers, and administrative staff, you will collaborate closely with the Learning and Capability team throughout the end-to-end learning lifecycle.

This requires a deep understanding of Corrections Victoria's evolving operational needs to design and tailor innovative training delivery approaches.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

• Utilise subject matter expertise to develop training materials and delivery plans for a new Working with Aboriginal People in Prison Training tailored to the custodial environment.
• Collaborate with Aboriginal stakeholders, Learning and Capability teams and other operational stakeholders to support the design, scheduling and continuous improvement of training programs.
• Deliver engaging and tailored Working with Aboriginal People in Prison Training sessions to Corrections Victoria staff.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting it.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
• Proven ability to lead engaging group and individual training sessions that achieve targeted learning outcomes, with strong leadership skills to guide and mentor trainees, fostering a culture of professional growth and continuous learning.
• Strong understanding of custodial environments, including prison operations, workforce practices, and responsibilities of prison officers to inform and support effective training delivery.

Qualifications

• Operational experience in Victorian prisons is highly desirable.
• A current driver's licence is required due to the need to work across different locations (Mandatory).
• This is a designated role – A Certificate of Aboriginality (CoA) must be provided prior to being appointed to the role (Mandatory).
