The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Manager to join the Complex Classification Unit, where you'll help shape critical placement and sentence management decisions for some of the most complex individuals in custody.

The Sentence Management Division plays a vital role in Corrections Victoria by ensuring people in custody are placed in the most appropriate environment throughout their sentence. Balancing community safety, security, rehabilitation and operational needs, the Division oversees sentence planning and placement decisions that support the safe and effective management of Victoria's correctional system.

Within the Division, the Complex Classification Unit specialises in managing individuals who present high-risk, high-profile or complex needs. The team works across prisons and Community Correctional Services, providing expert advice and oversight to support informed decision-making and reduce risk across the system.

About the Role

As the Assistant Manager, Complex Classification, you'll play a key role in assessing and managing some of the most complex individuals in Victoria's correctional system and contribute to critical decisions that support community safety and the effective operation of correctional facilities. Working within a highly specialised team, you will be responsible for the assessment, classification, sentence planning and sentence management of people identified with complex classification needs, with a focus on people accommodated in restricted prison environments, and mainstream/protection environments as required.

Based in Ravenhall, this role offers the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders across Corrections Victoria and will involve travel to correctional facilities throughout the state.

In this role, you will:

• Assess people in custody to determine appropriate classification and placement based on risk and individual needs.
• Review placements within Management and High Security Units, providing expert advice to inform placement and management decisions.
• Monitor and review complex individuals accommodated in mainstream and protection settings to ensure ongoing suitability.
• Prepare high-quality reports, assessments and briefing materials to support operational and strategic decision-making.
• Build strong working relationships with correctional facilities and key stakeholders to ensure consistent and effective sentence management outcomes.

We are currently recruiting two full-time ongoing positions to join the team.

About You

You are a confident and analytical professional who thrives in complex operational environments. You have sound judgement, excellent communication skills and the ability to make balanced decisions in high-risk situations.

You'll bring:

• Experience assessing and managing high-risk or complex individuals.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
• Excellent written communication skills, with experience preparing detailed reports and risk assessments.
• Experience working in custodial environments or with people in custody (highly regarded).
• Strong situational awareness, sound judgement and the ability to identify and respond to emerging risks.
• Knowledge of Corrections Victoria policies, procedures and relevant legislation, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.

• Relevant tertiary qualifications or experience in criminology, criminal justice or mental health/psychology is desirable.
