Please note we have opportunities available across a range of working patterns, including Saturday to Wednesday schedules and rota-based roles that operate across seven days and include some weekend working.

As a Senior Journalist in our Sydney based Digital News team, you will play a pivotal role in delivering around-the-clock coverage to BBC audiences across the UK and worldwide. Working at the heart of our global newsroom, you'll take ownership of major developing stories as coverage transitions from our UK and US teams, ensuring audiences remain informed across key time zones in North America, Asia and beyond. 

You will lead live coverage, write and edit compelling text and video content, curate digital front pages, and collaborate with colleagues across the BBC's international network. This is an exciting opportunity to shape journalism that reaches millions of people every day.

Key Accountabilities and Impact

• Spot and prioritise the stories that matter most, producing clear, accurate and engaging content for digital audiences across text and video.
• Take a leading editorial role during busy news periods, making sound decisions under pressure to ensure coverage is fast, authoritative and accessible.
• Drive coverage of breaking news, developing angles, writing strong headlines and introductions, and using video, images and other formats to bring stories to life.
• Use audience data, search trends and social insights to inform editorial decisions, grow readership and ensure our journalism reaches the widest possible audience.
• Curate digital news products across the BBC News website and app, presenting stories in ways that maximise impact and engagement. Your work will be seen by millions of readers in the UK and around the world.
• Work closely with editors and colleagues across the newsroom to highlight the most important stories and video of the day, refining headlines, imagery and story placement to deliver the strongest possible news offer.
• Collaborate with teams across the BBC's global network to ensure seamless coverage of major stories and a consistent editorial approach across platforms.

• Significant experience writing and editing breaking news for digital audiences, with a strong focus on accuracy, context, tone and speed.
• Strong understanding of the formats, tools and editorial techniques used in live digital news coverage, including live pages, text stories and video content.
• Proven experience using audience data, search insights, social media and curation tools to inform coverage, strengthen storytelling and grow audiences.
• A strong track record of covering UK and international news, with the ability to make confident editorial decisions under pressure on major developing stories.
• Excellent editorial judgement and a thorough understanding of the BBC's Editorial Guidelines and values.
• Experience leading journalists during live coverage and working collaboratively with teams across different departments, locations and time zones.
• Experience curating digital news products and delivering content promotion strategies in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
• The ability to assess large volumes of information quickly, identify the most important developments and present them accurately, impartially and engagingly for digital audiences.
