Head Chef

About the role

With the Signal Station reopening in early October, we’re looking for our Head Chef to join us ahead of opening and play an important part in bringing the kitchen to life.

As Head Chef, you’ll take genuine ownership of the kitchen and work closely with the owners to shape a food offering that feels right for the Signal Station, its location and the people who visit us. You’ll have the freedom to develop and evolve the menu, build strong supplier relationships and create a kitchen that is organised, efficient and commercially sound. From managing food and labour costs through to building and developing your team, you’ll set the standards for how the kitchen operates and the quality of every plate that leaves it. You'll deliver consistently excellent food, even when things get busy. The Signal Station will operate predominantly during the day, making this a rare opportunity for a senior chef looking for a full-time leadership role with primarily daytime hours. There will be occasional evening events and special functions, but these will be the exception rather than the everyday.

• Menu development and seasonal menu changes

• Food quality, consistency and presentation

• Food costing, margins and cost control

• Ordering, stock management and supplier relationships

• Kitchen systems, procedures and compliance

• Waste management and efficient kitchen operations

• Rostering and labour management

• Recruiting, training and developing the kitchen team

• Maintaining a clean, organised and professional kitchen

• Delivering consistently excellent food, even when things get busy

About you

• Experienced Head Chef, or a strong Sous Chef ready to take the next step

• Commercially minded, organised and confident managing the operational side of a kitchen

• Loves good food without needing to overcomplicate it

• Understands food and labour costs

• Can design a menu that is both exciting and commercially viable

• Sets high standards and leads by example

• Calm, organised and solutions-focused

• Takes pride in a clean and well-run kitchen

• Enjoys developing people and building a positive team culture

• Understands that the guest experience comes first

The Signal Station is a small, character-filled restaurant perched above Hobart in Mount Nelson, with an incredible location, a rich history and a very simple philosophy: we are guest obsessed. We’re building a small team of people who genuinely care about how others feel and want every person who walks through our doors to leave feeling like they’ve been part of something special, and part of us.

After a period of closure, the Signal Station is reopening with a fresh chapter ahead.
