The Role

We are seeking a Finance & Business Lead to serve as the operational heartbeat of our organisation. If you love taking ownership of financial and business operations, and bring a hands-on, practical mindset, this is your opportunity to drive meaningful change from the ground up.  

Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with the Finance & Administration Officer, this role plays a critical, hands-on role in maintaining the day-to-day financial and operational functions. Ideal for an agile self-starter—such as an experienced finance professional with small-business, sole-trader, or non-profit expertise—this role balances core daily workflows with strategic support of organisational governance.

Operating within a small, dynamic, and remote team environment, the Finance & Business Lead plays a key role in executing daily operations, maintaining operational stability while supporting WRA’s mission in global relief and development. 

The role requires strong business and financial skills, along with expertise in the rules and regulations governing nonprofits such as understanding of Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR), Public Benevolent Institutions (PBI), Trusts, compliance requirements set by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). 

Familiarity with the rules and regulations related to nonprofit marketing and fundraising is also beneficial. As part of a small team with an “all hands on deck” approach, this position requires flexibility and collaboration across multiple areas to ensure the organisation runs effectively.

This role would suit a strong nonprofit financial and operational business generalist who is collaborative, confident, professionally warm, and teachable, with a positive attitude.

What You’ll Do

• Core Financial Operations (35%): Hands-on delivery of end-to-end bookkeeping, fortnightly payroll, superannuation, WorkCover, BAS/ATO lodgements, cashflow management, accounts payable/receivable, routine donor receipting, and banking—collaborating closely with the Finance & Admin Officer on day-to-day processing. 
• International & Compliance (35%): Execute international fund transfers to partner organisations (ICDOs) with full compliance checks, process bi-weekly Remittance Advice Forms (RAFs), manage ACNC reporting, and maintain end-to-end readiness for the annual March audit, working alongside the Finance & Admin Officer to ensure operational compliance. 
• Systems & Operational Administration (20%): Lead day-to-day administrative operations across CRM, IT, email, and filing systems while taking ownership of HR administration, annual insurance renewals, end of month (EOM) processing, and 6-monthly partner reports, in close collaboration with the Finance & Admin Officer. 
• Strategic & CEO Support (10%): Work directly with the CEO on annual budgets, board and management reports, and project forecasts, methodically introducing business systems and process improvements to streamline operations over time.

Core details

This permanent part-time role is 15 hours per week across Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, typically from 9.00am to 2.30pm with a 30-minute break. Flexibility will be required at times to meet partner and business needs. Time in lieu is available upon request.

This role requires occasional in-person team meetings, or bank meetings as required.

This is a work-from-home remote role. While applicants from any location are welcome, we are strongly seeking a candidate based in or near Newcastle, NSW or Adelaide, SA

Required qualifications & experience

• Qualifications in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, business or related field
• Experience using Reckon and Xero
• Experience in end-of-month reconciliation process, reports, BAS and audit preparation
• Demonstrated experience in financial management or business operations
• Knowledge of ACNC compliance, DGR and PBI structures, ATO obligations
• Experience in the not-for-profit or charity sector

Desired qualifications and experience  

• Located in or near Newcastle, NSW or Adelaide, SA
• Experience with international fund transfers and donor receipting
