This role plays a key role in developing and supporting the haematology and blood film morphology skills of Monash Health Pathology network. As a Grade 3 Medical Scientist, you will provide technical leadership, on bench staff training and specialist blood film morphology expertise in a comnplex diagnostic environment. Key aspects include:

• Specialist Expertise: Performing and overseeing morphology training.

• Quality & Compliance: Supporting quality assurance activities and maintaining NATA accreditation requirements.

• Staff Support: Providing training, supervision and competency assessment for laboratory staff.

• Continuous Improvement: Contributing to assay, workflow and service improvements.

• Resource Management: Assisting with maintaining and increasing morphology expertise.

• Teamwork & Communication: Working closely with pathologists, clinicians and laboratory staff to deliver high-quality services.

• Safety & Professional Practice: Maintaining laboratory safety standards and supporting professional development.

About the Department/ Program

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a formal partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service as one of two pathology networks for metropolitan Melbourne. All roles in the Pathology Programs are working to develop the Partnership and ensure we continue to provide high quality care for the patients across the health services.

Monash Health Pathology is an integral part of Monash Health. It is the largest public provider of Pathology services in the state and currently operates 6 laboratories. The largest of these is located at the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, with additional laboratories located at the Dandenong, Moorabbin, Casey, Victorian Heart Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospitals. There are currently 18 collection locations based within the hospital sites and community settings. Services are provided to the Public and Private sectors, and other laboratory services.

About the Role

Join Monash Health Pathology as a Medical Scientist Grade 3 - Morphology Trainer and Training Coordinator and play a key role in developing and supporting our haematology workforce.

In this senior role, you will lead and coordinate morphology training across our laboratory network, supporting Senior Scientists and laboratory teams across six laboratories. Working closely with pathologists and senior scientists, you will provide expert blood film morphology guidance, deliver practical on-bench training, mentor trainers and laboratory staff, and promote a culture of learning, quality, and continuous improvement. A detail-oriented Medical Scientist who performs diagnostic testing in accordance with established protocols, ensuring high standards of quality, safety and accuracy while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary laboratory team.

• Perform routine diagnostic laboratory testing in line with protocols

• Ensure quality, accuracy and safety of all analytical work

• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment

• Record and manage data, specimens and reagents effectively

• Collaborate with team, support training and continuous improvement

Key responsibilities include:

• Provide hands-on, on-bench training and mentorship to trainers and laboratory staff.

• Provide expert blood film morphology support to ensure high-quality haematology diagnostic services.

• Collaborate with pathologists and Senior Scientists to drive quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

• Support accreditation, quality assurance, and service development initiatives.

This role is ideal for an experienced morphology scientist with a passion for education, mentoring, and excellence in laboratory practice.

About You

To be successful in this healthcare role, you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience, and attributes:

• Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or recognised equivalent is essential

• Demonstrated experience in haematology laboratory testing and diagnostic service delivery.

• Advanced expertise in blood film morphology; experience with digital morphology platforms is desirable.

• Proven experience delivering training, mentoring staff, and developing competency assessment programs.

• Ability to provide practical on-bench training and support across multiple laboratory sites.

• Strong knowledge of quality assurance, accreditation, and continuous improvement processes.

• Excellent analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with pathologists, senior scientists, and laboratory staff.
