Senior Health Lawyer

The Role

An opportunity has become available for a Senior Health Lawyer to join Gold Coast Health (GCH) where the focus of our 14 000-strong team is on providing world-class health care to people living in the Gold Coast, and northern New South Wales region of Australia.

You will

• Provide support and assistance to the Principal Lawyers (Deputy General Counsel) within the organisation's legal team structure
• Prepare/review statements to inform coronial investigations and instruct Counsel and represent the organisation's interests as an advocate at Coronial inquests
• Review statements for police investigations, criminal proceedings or other litigation matters
• Manage medical negligence and non health-care claims under the Personal Injury Proceedings Act 2002

About you

To be successful in this position you will require:

• Tertiary degree in Law and Admission to practice as a Legal Practitioner in Queensland
• Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association within Australia. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of duties.
• While not mandatory, significant post admission experience (or agreed equivalent) gained within a similar field, quality corporate and/or government environment is highly desirable.
• Declaration of serious discipline history must be disclosed
• Criminal History Screening will be required for new employees (GCH will cover cost)

Salary

• Temporary full time (six months, with the possibility of extension)
• Base salary ranging from $5,396.70 - $5791.70 per fortnight

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) acts on behalf of Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS) and provides legal advice and services to management and staff across a broad range of legal issues in a coordinated and cost-effective manner. It serves as a resource for informed decision-making and creative problem-solving to facilitate the health service's pursuit of its mission to be a leader in compassionate, sustainable, highly reliable healthcare.

The OGC is situated within the Executive Division of Corporate Affairs. However, for the purpose of providing independent legal advice to GCHHS as a statutory corporation, upon instruction from stakeholders across the health service, the OGC is a discrete and independent functional unit.
