About the role
What's the role?
The Daily Telegraph is on the hunt for a Social Media Editor to drive how our journalism is distributed, discovered and engaged across all social platforms.
This role is designed for a social-first specialist who understands how to reach new audiences, grow existing communities and turn news stories into platform-appropriate content that performs.
This is not a reporting or story-writing role, it’s a hands-on audience role for someone who knows how to package journalism for social media, spot platform opportunities quickly and make smart decisions about how stories should be promoted across channels.
Working in a fast-paced newsroom, the Social Media Editor will sit at the centre of our daily publishing operation, helping ensure our journalism reaches the right audiences in the right format at the right time. The successful candidate will combine strong platform knowledge, sharp editorial judgement, creative instincts and a clear understanding of what resonates with NSW audiences across social media.
Key responsibilities
Publish and distribute The Daily Telegraph’s journalism across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and emerging channels
Create platform-specific posts, captions, packaging and promotional assets designed to maximise reach, engagement and audience growth
Identify opportunities to extend the life and impact of stories through smart social distribution
Adapt newsroom content into formats that suit different social audiences and platform behaviours
Monitor trends, conversations and breaking news moments to identify timely social opportunities
Work closely with editors, reporters, designers and video teams to promote priority journalism effectively
Use performance data and audience insights to refine posting strategy, improve engagement and grow referral traffic
Test headlines, copy, visuals, posting times and formats to improve content performance
Help build stronger connections with NSW audiences by tailoring social output to local interests and conversations
Maintain a consistent brand voice and high editorial standards across all social channels
Contribute ideas for audience growth, community engagement and platform development
Support live coverage and major news events with fast, accurate and engaging social publishing
Who are you?
You have strong experience managing social media accounts for a publisher, newsroom, media brand or similarly fast-moving content business
You have sound news judgement and know how to handle breaking news responsibly on social media
You understand how different platforms work and how audiences behave across each of them
You know how to write social copy that is clear, compelling and suited to each platform
You’re confident turning published journalism into social content that attracts attention and drives action
You have a strong understanding of audience growth, engagement and social referral strategies
You’re comfortable using analytics and platform insights to guide decisions and improve results
You’re organised, collaborative and able to work quickly under deadline pressure
You understand the interests of NSW audiences and can package content accordingly
Experience with short-form video, visual storytelling or social content creation tools will be highly regarded
