About the role
Megavar is a specialist high voltage engineering firm delivering primary design, protection and control, SCADA, testing and commissioning, and substation maintenance for network businesses and generators across Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. Our SCADA and automation team works on transmission and distribution substation projects for clients including ElectraNet, TasNetworks, TransGrid, Downer, Acciona, Vestas and Goldwind — direct project ownership, without the layers of a large multidisciplinary firm standing between you and the work.
We're looking for a Senior Substation SCADA and Automation Engineer to lead the design and commissioning of substation automation systems, from concept through to site handover, across a genuinely varied caseload of transmission and distribution projects.
What You'll Be Doing
Leading, reviewing and verifying detailed designs and technical reports for substation automation systems, including IEC 61850 schemes.
Experience in developing design documents (system architecture drawings, layouts, signal list, configurations, etc.) and testing documents (ITPS, SCADA Commissioning Plans), etc.
Prepare specifications of SCADA equipment (RTU, Engineering PC, Switches, etc.).
Delivering substation automation projects from concept through to commissioning.
Owning the technical integration and implementation of complex control and automation systems.
Focusing on automation and SCADA across transmission and distribution substations.
Contributing to project tenders and supporting delivery on time and within budget.
Coordinating directly with client SCADA representatives to align end-to-end displays and databases for commissioning.
Undertaking site inspections and preparing associated reporting.
Liaising directly with clients and contractors on technical issues and problem resolution.
What We're Looking For
A bachelor's degree in electrical or computer engineering.
3+ years' experience in controls (automation) and SCADA, with the ability to deliver complete end-to-end solutions independently.
Extensive, demonstrated experience with control system hardware and software from major vendors — Citect, Foxboro, GE, Schweitzer (SEL) and Siemens.
A track record leading design and commissioning on complex upgrades of existing plant.
Strong familiarity with primary and secondary systems hardware and nomenclature as used in transmission and distribution substations.
Detailed working knowledge of SCADA system design, RTU and gateway configuration, PLC and HMI configuration, Ethernet switch/router configuration, and database systems.
Demonstrated leadership — influencing, motivating and delegating across project teams.
Strong attention to detail and the discipline to meet deadlines on client-facing work.
Why Megavar
Genuine technical ownership — lead automation and SCADA delivery on projects for ElectraNet, TasNetworks, TransGrid, Downer, Acciona, Vestas and Goldwind, not several layers removed from the client.
Breadth of exposure across major control system platforms — Citect, Foxboro, GE, SEL and Siemens — rather than a single-vendor environment.
A technical leadership track as Megavar grows from 57 to 63+ staff across four offices.
Flexible working arrangements, based in our Adelaide office.
Relocation assistance available for the right candidate moving interstate.
Attractive senior-level salary package with genuine scope to shape how the SCADA and automation practice grows.
