Head Teacher Special Education - Turramurra High School

Turramurra High School is a vibrant and dynamic coeducational secondary school located on the Upper North Shore of Sydney. With approximately 915 students, the school is committed to academic excellence, personal growth and inclusion. Approximately 38% of students come from language backgrounds other than English, and the school proudly supports Aboriginal students and an International Students Program. Further strengthening its commitment to inclusive education, the school is establishing a new  multi-categorical Support Unit with 2 classes while continuing to oversee the Brolga Unit at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital.

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice

2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs

3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams

4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents

5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning

6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria, 

1. Approval to teach special education and/or experience and expertise in teaching students with complex needs including autism, challenging behaviours, and mental health concerns.

2. Demonstrated ability to be a visible, approachable and responsive leader who has the ability to work collaboratively as an effective member of the executive team to achieve strategic school priorities and drive continuous school improvement.

3. Capacity to establish and resource inclusive learning environments, including planning and implementing accessible educational spaces that are age appropriate and meet the diverse learning, wellbeing and support needs of students with disability.

4. Proven capacity to build staff capability in the development, implementation and review of individualised learning, behaviour, wellbeing and transition plans, with a strong understanding of Life Skills for students with disability, while promoting high expectations and positive student outcomes.
