Deputy Commissioner, Public Groups

We are seeking an experienced and influential leadership professional to lead our Public Groups business line. 

As the Deputy Commissioner, Public Groups, you will play an important role in contributing to the overall strategic direction of the Compliance and Engagement Group, the ATO and the APS more broadly. Leading in a complex and dynamic environment, you will foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, integrity and inclusion, while guiding a highly skilled workforce and building trusted relationships across government, industry and the tax profession. 

You will lead the Public Groups business line in protecting the integrity and sustainability of Australia’s tax and superannuation systems by working closely with public and multinational businesses to ensure they meet their obligations. 

You’ll strengthen community confidence through increased transparency of large business tax compliance, providing clear and timely guidance supported by real-time assurance, and promoting meaningful public reporting of large business tax behaviour. Drawing on insights gained through taxpayer engagements, you will deliver trusted strategic advice to Government and Treasury, while influencing tax advisers and intermediaries to uphold ethical conduct, address poor practices and support willing participation in the tax and superannuation systems.

Working collaboratively with your SES peers, you will build trusted relationships across the organisation and external stakeholder groups to deliver strategic outcomes and meet government priorities. As a member of the ATO's senior leadership team, you will provide strategic, organisational and people leadership, helping shape the future of the ATO.

To be considered you must also have: 

• demonstrated experience leading assurance, compliance and engagement activities that support clients to understand and meet their Australian tax and superannuation obligations 
• deep knowledge of taxation, compliance and risk management frameworks, with the ability to apply contemporary approaches to sustainably reduce non-compliance and improve client outcomes 
• experience designing and implementing client engagement strategies that educate, influence and support clients to meet their obligations, with a focus on prevention and early intervention 
• strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with an ability to build trusted relationships and work collaboratively with government, industry, professional bodies and large market taxpayers to achieve shared outcomes
• demonstrated capability to leverage data, intelligence and risk insights to inform decision-making, identify emerging risks and provide confidence to government and the community that compliance risks are effectively managed.
