Country Liaison Officer - Solomon Islands

This is a unique opportunity to support Solomon Islands workers in Australia under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. The role is with the Solomon Islands Labour Mobility Unit and is based in Australia, with Brisbane as the preferred location.

Palladium is advertising this role on behalf of the Solomon Islands Government. The Country Liaison Officer is recruited by and reports to the Director of the Solomon Islands Labour Mobility Unit. An Australia-based Employer of Record provides operational management, including contracting and logistical support.

This is a fixed-term opportunity to 30 June 2027, with possible extension. Applicants must already have valid work rights in Australia. This role is based in Australia and visa sponsorship is not available.

About the Solomon Islands Labour Mobility Unit

The Solomon Islands Labour Mobility Unit (LMU), within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, leads the Solomon Islands Government's participation in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme and other labour mobility programmes. The PALM scheme enables Solomon Islanders to access employment opportunities in Australia, build skills and experience, and contribute to their families and communities through remittances. The LMU works with government, industry and development partners to support worker recruitment, mobilisation, welfare and reintegration, ensuring labour mobility opportunities are delivered in a safe, fair and inclusive manner that benefits workers, employers and the Solomon Islands economy.

About the role

The Country Liaison Officer will help Solomon Islands workers in Australia understand their employment, workplace rights, responsibilities, superannuation and support options. The role works closely with the Solomon Islands Labour Mobility Unit, PALM employers, Australian Government agencies, PLMSP, community services and other partners to support worker wellbeing and safe participation in the PALM scheme.

The role will:

• Provide culturally appropriate support to Solomon Islands workers, including help to understand workplace rights, responsibilities, superannuation, pay, deductions and where to seek help.
• Coach and build the confidence of workers so they can understand their rights, manage employment matters, raise concerns early and use the right support and referral pathways.
• Build positive working relationships with PALM employers, worker wellbeing staff, Australian Government agencies, the Solomon Islands Government and community services.
• Respond to complex, sensitive or urgent welfare matters in a calm, respectful and professional way, including during critical incidents and crisis situations.
• Manage competing priorities, travel, records, reporting and urgent requests while keeping worker welfare and safety at the centre of the work.
• Identify emerging welfare trends and share practical feedback to help improve support for Solomon Islands workers.

The Solomon Islands Labour Mobility Unit is looking for someone who:

• Is fluent in English and a Solomon Islands language, and can communicate clearly with workers, employers and government stakeholders.
• Has strong judgement and can stay calm, respectful and practical when responding to complex issues, complaints or crisis situations.
• Can work independently, manage competing priorities and follow formal referral and escalation processes.
• Has experience supporting people from diverse cultural backgrounds and building trust across communities, employers and government partners.
• Holds a current Australian driver licence and can travel within Australia, including outside regular business hours when required.
• Is confident using Microsoft Office, email, online systems and written records to manage information safely and accurately.
