Primary objective
Provide high level expert advice and legal opinion to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), other prosecutors and to both internal and
external stakeholders relating to the prosecution of more complex criminal cases. Provide representation at the highest level for the Crown
before all courts of the Northern Territory and the High Court of Australia in complex prosecutions, appeals and related matters.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Appear as Crown Counsel in the prosecution of complex matters before the Supreme Court.
2. Provide high level expert advice and legal opinion to investigating police, the DPP and other prosecutors relating to the prosecution

of more complex criminal cases.
3. Manage the carriage and conduct of more complex and contested crown prosecutions, pleas, bail hearings and preliminary

examinations, contest mentions, appeals and related proceedings in accordance with the Director’s Guidelines.
4. Appellate work before the Court of Criminal Appeal.
5. Appropriately consult, liaise, inform and negotiate with defence counsel, victims, investigating police, court staff and the Witness

Assistance Service.
6. Provide professional advice and support to other prosecutors and promote a team environment. Be a mentor and provide guidance

and training to less experienced prosecutors.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.
2. Ability to provide high level expert advice and legal opinion to the DPP, other prosecutors and to both internal and external

stakeholders, relating to the prosecution of more complex criminal cases.
3. High level knowledge of and experience in criminal law, practice and procedure. High level knowledge of the DPP Prosecution Policy

and Guidelines and the ability to prosecute in accordance with the same.
4. Working knowledge of Uniform Evidence Law.
5. Proven experience and ability in the conduct of more complex criminal trials before a jury.
6. High level oral and written communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage, negotiate and

collaborate with other agencies, defence agencies, Courts, local communities, other external stakeholders and the general public.
7. Proven ability to manage a legal practice in accordance with internal practices and procedures working with competing demands

under pressure.
8. Well-developed political and cross cultural awareness skills together with a sound understanding of Aboriginal issues relevant to

prosecution services.

1. Relevant post graduate qualifications.
