About the role
The Versatile Group is seeking an experienced Project Accountant to join our Finance team based in our Sydney CBD Head Office. Working closely with Project Managers, Commercial teams and Senior Accountants, you'll play a critical role in the financial management of a portfolio of construction projects from award through to completion.
This is an excellent opportunity for an accountant who enjoys partnering with operational teams, thrives in a fast-paced project environment, and wants to be involved in the commercial success of major construction projects.
As a Project Accountant, you will be responsible for the financial reporting, forecasting and cost control of multiple concurrent construction projects. You'll work closely with project delivery teams to ensure accurate reporting, maintain strong financial controls and provide valuable commercial insights throughout each project's lifecycle.
Project Financial Reporting
Prepare monthly project cost reports, budget-to-actual variance analysis and Forecast Final Cost (FFC) reporting.
Maintain and reconcile project cost-to-complete models.
Analyse project performance and provide financial insights to support decision-making.
Cost Control & Contract Administration
Establish and maintain project budgets and cost codes within the ERP/job costing system.
Review and process subcontractor progress claims, variations and retentions.
Reconcile committed costs, purchase orders and accruals with Project Managers.
Monitor project retentions and bank guarantees.
WIP, Billing & Revenue
Prepare and review monthly Work in Progress (WIP) reporting across active projects.
Investigate and resolve WIP anomalies, unbilled revenue and cost accrual discrepancies.
Ensure project margins, costs and revenue are accurately reported.
Compliance & Financial Controls
Support month-end reporting and financial close processes.
Assist with external audit requirements by preparing supporting project financial documentation.
Ensure compliance with internal financial controls and company policies.
Business Partnering
Partner with Project Managers, Site Managers and Commercial teams to provide financial guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
Support project close-out activities, including final cost reconciliation, retention releases and defects liability provisioning.
You'll be a commercially minded accountant who enjoys working closely with operational teams and has experience in project-based environments.
Ideally you'll have:
Degree qualifications in Accounting, Commerce or Finance.
CA or CPA qualification (or currently working towards completion).
3–6 years' accounting experience within construction, property development or a project-based environment.
Current experience as a Project Accountant (or in a role reporting directly to one).
Strong understanding of job costing and project accounting principles.
Experience using ERP/job costing systems such as Jobpac or similar.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Exposure to subcontractor progress claims, retentions and Security of Payment legislation (highly regarded).
We're looking for someone who is:
Highly organised and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Detail-oriented with excellent analytical and reconciliation skills.
A proactive problem solver who enjoys investigating variances.
Confident communicating financial information to operational stakeholders.
A collaborative team player with a strong commercial mindset.
At The Versatile Group, you'll become part of a collaborative, high-performing business delivering quality construction projects across New South Wales. We invest in our people, encourage career progression and provide the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals across finance, commercial and project delivery.
If you're looking for a role where you can make a genuine impact while developing your career in a growing organisation, we'd love to hear from you.
