ABOUT BSP
Established in 1995, BSP Engineering is a family-owned specialist in mechanical pipe fabrication for commercial and industrial projects. We fabricate carbon and stainless steel pipework, pump and fan skids, tanks and vessels, and pipe supports from our 2,000m² facility in Dandenong South.
Our customers are commercial HVAC contractors. They carry programme and quality risk on site, and they rely on us to get the pipework right and get it there on time. Quality, communication and on-time delivery are how we win work and keep it.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Weld carbon and stainless steel pipe, tube and vessels to code, first time, to the standard the drawing and the procedure call for.
The Pipe Welder is a coded, hands-on trade role at the sharp end of BSP’s quality promise. The holder works from isometrics and shop drawings, welds to qualified procedures, and delivers pipe spools, skids and vessels that pass inspection and testing without rework. Weld quality here decides whether a plant room goes together on site or becomes a back-charge.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Welding and fabrication
• Weld carbon and stainless steel pipe and tube using GTAW (TIG) and GMAW or FCAW (MIG) processes, across all positions including 5G and 6G.
• Complete root, fill and cap runs to the qualified weld procedure specification, including inert gas back-purging on stainless.
• Weld pressure pipe and pressure vessels to the applicable code, including longitudinal and circumferential seams, nozzles, branches, set-ons, set-ins and flanged connections.
• Set out, fit and tack pipe spools from isometrics and shop drawings, holding dimensional tolerance, alignment and orientation.
• Prepare pipe ends. Bevel, clean, check root gap and fit-up before an arc is struck.
• Fabricate and weld pump and fan skids, tanks and vessels, headers, manifolds, risers and fabricated pipe supports.
• Select the correct consumables, filler metal, shielding and purge gas and machine parameters for the material and procedure.
• Control heat input, interpass temperature and distortion. Fix alignment problems before they compound down the spool.
• Grind, dress and finish welds. Pickle and passivate stainless where the specification calls for it.
• Operate cutting, drilling and roll grooving equipment as required.
• Use overhead cranes and forklifts to move pipe, spools and assemblies safely and without damage.
Quality and code compliance
• Weld only to current, qualified weld procedure specifications. Hold personal welder qualifications current and re-test before they lapse.
• Identify or stamp welds as required. Complete weld maps, heat number records and material traceability documentation as work progresses, not after.
• Present work for visual inspection, NDT, and hydrostatic or pneumatic testing. Complete any repair promptly and to procedure.
• Work to project inspection and test plans and respect hold points. Nothing non-conforming leaves the bay.
• Own defects. Understand the cause, and stop the repeat.
Safety
• Work to BSP safety procedures, SWMS and JSAs at all times.
• Manage hot work, fume extraction, screening and housekeeping in and around the welding bay.
• Inspect welding plant, leads, regulators, gas fittings and lifting gear before use. Tag out anything faulty.
• Wear and maintain the correct PPE for the process and the material.
• Report hazards, near misses and incidents immediately.
Delivery and team
• Work to the daily and weekly production schedule. Flag drawing conflicts, material shortages and delays early, with options.
• Book time accurately against job cards on the day, so job costing and scheduling stay reliable.
• Keep the bay clean, organised and stocked to 5S standard.
• Support and coach apprentices and trade assistants.
• Carry out other reasonable duties across the workshop as required.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
• Minimum 3 years welding carbon and stainless steel pipe and tube in a fabrication workshop.
• Current welder qualification including Certificate III in Engineering, Fabrication Trade (MEM30319) or recognised equivalent. In some instances, relevant experience can substitute the need for formal qualifications
• Demonstrated experience welding pressure pipe and pressure vessels to code, for example AS 4458, AS 4041, AS 1210 or recognised international equivalents.
• Confident all-positional pipe welding, including 5G and 6G.
• Working knowledge of the relevant Australian Standards for welding and pipework, including AS/NZS 1554.1, AS/NZS 1554.6, AS/NZS 3992 and AS/NZS ISO 9606-1.
• Able to read and work from isometrics, shop drawings, weld maps and weld procedure specifications without supervision.
• Familiar with NDT and pressure testing regimes and the documentation that goes with them.
• Accurate, methodical, and able to hold quality under programme pressure.
• Australian work rights.
