Diesel Fitter – Maintenance & Reliability

About the role

Nitro Crushing is seeking a trade-qualified Crushing Fitter to join us in Cairns and keep our Far North Queensland crews running. This is a hands-on field role — you'll be out on quarry and mine sites, travelling and staying away as the work schedule requires, with Cairns as your home base. Reporting to the Maintenance and Parts Supervisor, you'll be the fitter on the ground — responding to breakdowns, changing wear parts, running scheduled services, and keeping the plant turning alongside the crushing crew. This is a residential Cairns role, not FIFO from elsewhere. You'll live locally, work with the same FNQ crews, and head out to site when the schedule calls for it. Travel and accommodation are covered when you're away.

Key responsibilities

• Respond to breakdowns in the field and return plant to service safely and promptly

• Diagnose and rectify mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and basic electrical faults on crushers, screens and conveyors

• Fault find on diesel engines, drive systems, gearboxes and hydraulic circuits

• Carry out scheduled servicing on mobile crushing and screening plant, support gear and light vehicles

• Change wear parts — jaw plates, cone liners, blow bars, screen media, skirting and conveyor rollers

• Complete cone and jaw changes, mantle and concave replacement

• Welding, oxy cutting and general fabrication repairs to plant, chutes and guarding

• Service and maintain loaders, excavators, gensets and site support equipment

• Assist with plant set-up, pack-up and relocation between sites

• Complete job cards, service sheets, defect reports and machine hour records

About you

• Trade qualification — Diesel Fitter / Heavy Diesel Mechanic (mandatory)

• Current open Australian driver's licence (mandatory)

• Hands-on experience maintaining mobile crushing and screening plant

• Strong mechanical and hydraulic fault finding capability

• Welding and oxy cutting competence for field repairs

• Experience with Terex Finlay plant highly regarded

• Current HR licence (desirable)

• RII tickets for loader and/or excavator (desirable)

• Reliable and able to work with limited direct supervision
