Principal Consultant (Technology)

THE BUSINESS
A Sydney headquartered technology consultancy. 100+ people across Australia and Asia. 10+ years in business and growing. They are the trusted technology arm for traditional mid sized businesses.
THE ROLE SUMMARY
You work out what technology solutions a mid sized business should build, then make sure it gets built. In practice that is discovery and scoping with the client, running the workshops, and directing the engineering team who deliver it. Usually a handful of clients at the same time. You may encounter a range of project types, including data (pipelines, reporting, warehousing), custom software and automation, systems integration, AI driven solutions, etc. Most clients have the same goal: work out how they can use technology to scale revenue without headcount. Reporting to the CTO.
A TYPICAL WEEK
In any given week, you might:
- Run a handful of client sessions, from discovery on new work, to steering projects already running.- Run a workshop. Get clients in a room, work out what they need, and leave with clear next steps.- Manage the offshore engineering team. Review what's been built, unblock them, make decisions.- Scope new work alongside a business development manager and CTO.- Check what the engineering team has produced before it reaches the client.- Keep up with what is new in technology and AI. Clients need you to be their eyes and ears.
WHAT YOU OWN
- The client relationship, from the first discovery conversation through to delivery.- The scope. What gets built, in what order, and what resources are needed.- The engineering team's direction. They build, you decide what and why.- The technical conversation with whoever owns technology at the client (e.g. CTO, CEO).- Whether what gets delivered solves the problem the client came in with in the first place.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- A consulting or agency background. You've worked across several clients at once, not just one.- You have managed engineers and been accountable for what they delivered.- A strong breadth of knowledge across industries, technologies, and business acumen.- You keep up with what is happening in technology and AI.- Senior enough to run projects with minimal supervision from the CTO.- A working picture of the entire technology stack so you can have technical discussions with clients, e.g. AI/models, data, backend, frontend, automation, integration, cloud, security, etc.
THE DETAILS
- Sydney-based.- Permanent, full time.- 3 days a week onsite (2 days remote).- Reporting to the CTO.- $130k to $160k base.
