Workshop Manager & Lead Mechanic - Hastings

About the role

This is a hands-on leadership position suited to an experienced technician who enjoys working on vehicles but is also ready to take greater ownership of the workshop, support other technicians and help ensure jobs are completed efficiently and to a high standard. Working closely with the Service Advisor and management team, you'll help oversee the day-to-day running of the workshop. You'll remain involved on the tools while becoming the senior technical and operational leader within the workshop. You'll have the authority to make decisions within the workshop and will play an important role in maintaining a productive, professional and supportive working environment.

Key responsibilities

• Leading and supporting the team of technicians and apprentices

• Diagnosing complex mechanical and electrical faults

• Carrying out servicing, repairs and diagnostic work when required on a variety of makes and models, including Ambulance Victoria vehicles

• Allocating and coordinating workshop jobs

• Monitoring workflow, productivity and job progress throughout the day

• Providing technical guidance and second opinions to technicians

• Performing quality-control checks and helping minimise rework

• Ensuring jobs are completed correctly, efficiently and on time

• Identifying additional repairs or maintenance required and communicating these clearly to the service team

• Supporting the training and development of junior technicians and apprentices

About you

• A qualified automotive technician/mechanic with strong industry experience

• Highly competent in diagnostics and fault finding

• Confident across a broad range of makes and models

• An experienced senior technician, foreman, workshop controller or workshop manager - or someone ready to step into that level

• Organised and capable of managing multiple jobs and priorities simultaneously

• Comfortable providing direction and holding high standards

• A good communicator who can work effectively with technicians, service advisors, management and customers when required

• Someone who takes pride in doing things properly

• Positive and proactive attitude

• Calm under pressure and willing to help the team when things get busy
