About the role
Our client is a well-established plaintiff personal injury law firm with a long-standing presence in the NSW compensation market.
Established more than 40 years ago, the firm acts exclusively for injured people across a range of compensation matters and has developed a particularly strong practice in NSW CTP claims arising from motor vehicle accidents.
The firm offers an experienced and structured personal injury environment where paralegals play an important role in progressing claims. There is a genuine emphasis on technical training and professional development, with experienced staff encouraged to build their knowledge and take greater ownership of their work.
The firm is looking to appoint an experienced Personal Injury Paralegal to join its CTP team.
Working closely with experienced plaintiff lawyers, you will assist with the day-to-day management and progression of NSW motor accident claims under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017.
This is not simply an administrative support position. You will have meaningful involvement throughout the life of a claim and work across both statutory benefits and common law damages matters.
Your responsibilities will include:
Assisting with the progression of NSW CTP claims from initial instructions through to resolution;
Obtaining detailed client instructions regarding the accident, injuries, treatment, employment and financial loss;
Liaising directly with clients throughout their claim and keeping them informed of progress;
Preparing and lodging claim documentation and monitoring statutory and procedural timeframes;
Liaising with CTP insurers regarding liability, treatment, statutory benefits and the progression of claims;
Assisting with disputes arising from insurer decisions;
Obtaining and reviewing clinical records, hospital records, radiology, employment and income documentation;
Preparing briefs and letters of instruction to medico-legal specialists and other experts;
Coordinating medico-legal examinations and obtaining supporting expert evidence;
Assisting with disputes concerning treatment, earning capacity, injury classification and other statutory benefit entitlements;
Assisting with the preparation of applications and supporting evidence for matters before the Personal Injury Commission;
Preparing chronologies, client statements and other evidentiary material;
Gathering and organising evidence relating to past and future economic loss;
Assisting lawyers with the preparation and progression of common law damages claims;
Preparing matters for settlement conferences, assessments and negotiations;
Liaising with medical practitioners, insurers, experts and other relevant parties; and
Managing critical dates, follow-ups and file progression across an active caseload.
As your experience develops, there will be scope to take increasing responsibility for the day-to-day conduct and progression of matters under solicitor supervision.
Ideally, you will have:
Previous experience as a paralegal within plaintiff personal injury law;
Experience with NSW CTP claims;
A working understanding of the NSW motor accident compensation scheme;
Experience progressing files beyond purely administrative tasks;
Exposure to statutory benefits and/or common law damages claims;
Experience obtaining and reviewing medical and economic loss evidence;
Familiarity with Personal Injury Commission processes;
Strong file management and organisational skills;
Good drafting skills and attention to detail;
Confidence communicating directly with clients, insurers, medical practitioners and experts; and
The ability to manage competing deadlines across a number of active matters.
Applications are welcomed from both career paralegals and candidates undertaking legal studies. You do not need to be pursuing admission to build a long-term career with the practice.
The firm offers:
Genuine involvement in the progression of NSW CTP claims;
Exposure to both statutory benefits and common law damages matters;
The opportunity to work alongside experienced plaintiff personal injury lawyers;
Strong internal training and ongoing technical development;
Continuing legal education opportunities for paralegal staff;
Increasing responsibility as your experience and capability develop;
Established systems and processes within a dedicated compensation practice;
Flexible working arrangements where appropriate;
A supportive and culturally diverse team environment; and
Genuine long-term career opportunities within plaintiff personal injury.
This opportunity would particularly suit a CTP paralegal who enjoys being actively involved in progressing claims, working directly with clients, developing the medical and financial evidence and assisting lawyers to move matters towards resolution, rather than working in a predominantly administrative role.
